The Love-Hate Relationship Between Girls And Their Hair

Our feelings aren't the only thing that makes us complicated.

I'm really not sure what it is. Our hair is sacred to us. To many of us, our hair is a way we can express ourselves, especially if we wear simpler clothes. Our hair can give us a sense of control; we choose how long to grow it, when to cut it, how to dye it, etc. And our hair can even tell stories. Hair is very important to us. But, if our hair can do all that for us, you'd think it would have a mind of its own. And, you would be correct. In that case, then, we never can truly agree 100% with our hair.

THE HATE

1. Shedding

Yes, practically like dogs, we shed our hair. Everyday, around the house, in the car, on our boyfriends. Our hair falls out and finds a new home somewhere else. But, eventually it piles up either in the bathroom shower, on the floor, or in the vacuum. My brother used to say I shed enough to create a hamster. He wasn't joking.

The worst part about shedding is that is happens to everyone, but the girls with dark hair hear all the complaining the most.

2. Changing it up.

This might not be the same for everyone, but changing up my hair is very complicated. Sometimes I take months to decide what I want to do, and usually before the final decision is made, I've changed my mind a thousand times. There are too many options. Die it red, cut my bangs, add layers, or keep up with the commitment I made a year ago to grow it out passed your lower back. But, of course, there is also the fear of whether or not I will like it.

3. Planning the shower.

This may sound silly, but us girls often plan our whole day around our hair (or at least we plan our shower around it). If I shower at night, I have to have enough time to dry it. If not, I'll wake up in the morning with serious bedhead. If I shower in the morning, I run the risk of not waking up on time to either shower, blow dry my hair, or curl/straighten it. Worse, my hair could get too frizzy to calm down after blowdrying it. So, if I want a seriously good looking head of hair for the day, I've got to have it all planned out, and I better set three extra alarms or else, it's a braid day.

THE LOVE

4. Playing with our hair.

Not that we like to play with our own hair, but when someone touches our heads, we are about to fall in love or fall asleep. We get such a calming sensation just from a minute or two of a head massage. Even if our hair has been in a pony tail all day or in a hat because it was a bad hair day, we don't care once the hands are in the hair.

5. When our hair is good, so are we.

There is something about a good hair day. There is really nothing like it. Our confidence goes up. Our happiness rises. Our smiles are bigger. One good hair days, I don't even need coffee. Even if I am late, the hair was worth it.

6. Changing it up.

Yes, this one gets filed under both love and hate. Yes it is hard to decided when to change it and how, but once it's done (and we know we like it), it's like a whole new world for us. (Wait, wrong Disney movie?) A new cut can give a girl new energy. It's something fresh and new, and it gives her a little edge. New color can give a girl more confidence. We can change out hair without changing our personalities.

7. It's our best accessory.

Our hair can be turned into bows, and even crowns now. There are so many different things you can do with it. The best part about our hair is that no matter how you are dressed or whether or not you are wearing makeup you still look good because your hair is done, and that is your best accessory.

So, our hair can be difficult. It can be stubborn and even evil at times. (Who wants a bad hair day the night of a first date? Yikes.) But, everyday we wake up to the challenge of wrestling our hair for the hope of a good hair day, and end in the end, the fight is worth it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
