Suicide Is Never The Answer

Every life is worth living to its fullest.

Suicide Is Never The Answer

Recently a football player at my school committed suicide. I heard his name shouted on Saturday afternoons and his voice was one of the loudest in the cafeteria, but I didn’t know him. I do know that even the most energetic and happy people are the sometimes the ones hiding something deep down and I also know that a life is never worth wasting.

I didn’t know him, but I wish I did. I wish he would have known how loved he was and how much he is missed now that he’s gone. I wish he would have known that there was a light at the end of the tunnel and people there to greet him there.

I’ve watched one of the happiest people I know become one of the people that isn’t here today anymore, so I know how it feels to be in disbelief and not understand how someone so happy and full of life is now gone, so with that being said, always be kind and smile. You never know what your kind act or smile could do for someone.

Also always check up on your friends and family. Make sure they know you love them and are there for them no matter what, reassurance never hurt anyone. Just because they are laughing and happy when they are around a group of people doesn’t mean that they are okay, just make sure they know you are there.

Now, if you feel like your life isn’t worth living anymore, you’re wrong. Your life is worth so much more than you’ll ever know. Whatever you are going through, whatever incredibly tough situation you are in does not end because you do, it gets worse.

Your family and friends will be heart broken, they will have to plan out a funeral and wonder where they went wrong. They will wonder what they could have done better or different. And you are missing out on so much, you’re missing your future and you’re missing all of the things you’ve planned out for your life.

I can not fathom what someone would have to go through to feel like that and I wish I could pull every person out of that feeling, but I do know that whether you think your life is important or not, I can tell you it is. It’s important for the people that love you and it’s important because you were put here on this planet for something great and you can’t leave this planet before that happens. You were destined to be something great and you are important.

I’ve seen the effects of suicide and I’ve watched one of my role models fall into someone I didn’t know anymore. I know that life isn’t easy, but I do know that whether it’s great or it’s awful, this life is worth it. The light at the end of the tunnel may just look like a flicker right now, but if you end your life it will go out, but if you take refuge in those that love you that light will get bigger and brighter every day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
