I learned from an early age that saving money is important. Unless items were absolutely necessary, I had to buy my own possessions. I never had an allowance and with any money I did get (from pet sitting and such), I had to put away 50% in a savings account. Being limited on money made me understand the importance of it.
In my area growing up, you were expected to have nice quality things since the area was very materialistic. That mindset was good for businesses, but not for me. I adopted a thrifty mindset, allowing me to fit in, but be true to my values by not making me be in debt. Over the years, this chic yet frugal mindset has helped me more times than I can count.
Here is an inside look into such mindset, for better or worse.
1. You mix deals and coupons
50% off an item plus a 50% off coupon? Score!
2. Thrift stores are your best friend
I can spend hours in a local thrift store sorting through the racks. Whenever I plan a shopping trip, that store is always the first one I head to.
3. You have designer items that you got for Walmart prices
Yes, I have nice things. No, I am not rich. I just love a good deal.
4. You try to avoid everything that is not on sale
It saves times and my wallet thanks me.
5. You brag about your findings and your savings
I realize that after a shopping trip, I can get annoying. However, sometimes I can't believe my own eyes when I look at the savings.
6. You cringe at everything that costs more than $10
Even if it costs $12, I begin to question if buying the item is worth it. The double digits scare me when it comes to shopping.
7. You shop at stores most people don't
Before last year, I didn't know Sears sells clothes. Often, I can't find good deals and good clothes there.
8. You go out of your way to go to an outlet mall
Whenever I say I am going to the outlet mall, people always respond with "the one way out there?" My "local" outlet mall is quite a distance away from me, but it is worth it to find designer clothes for great deals.
9. You know which items deserve quality and which deserve quantity
Safety? Usage? Versatility? I might be frugal, but I'm not cheap.
10. People always trust you when it comes to money and ask for your advice
Budgeting? Withholding money? Finding deals? I will gladly help with anything. I take the responsibility as a compliment.
11. You know when you need to spend extra money, you just hate doing it
Spending money makes me dread looking at my bank statements for the rest of the month, even though I needed the item.
12. People underestimate your thriftiness
I take it as a challenge. Mark my words, I will find the best deal. Bring it on.
