Good to Know

Coming home from college has a lot of mixed feelings. You have to return to your old life, yet leave the fun of college and live under your parents’ rules once again. Although I am happy to be home and to spend time with my friends and family, there are definitely some major changes between my college life and my life at home. Here are just a few.

Sundays

In college, Sundays are assumed to be the national day of rest. I spent my Sundays at college sleeping in late, waking up to do homework in bed, eating in bed, studying more in bed, then going back to sleep. At home, if I am not awake by at least 10 a.m., someone is smacking me with a pillow and attempting to get me to do something with my day.

Cleaning Up

In college, my roommate and I cleaned whenever we saw fit. This was normally when the ground was no longer visible or we were having friends over. At home, I can assume that if I leave clothes on the ground, I will most definitely hear about it 24/7 until the clothes are cleaned and put away.

Sleep Schedule

At school, a 4 a.m. bedtime was completely normal since I did not have classes until the afternoon. Now, it’s wake up at 8 a.m. and go to bed before midnight.

Language

Any college student can’t deny that their language is a little bit more colorful with their friends at school than at home with their family .

The Food

Nothing is more satisfying than eating a home cooked meal and finally seeing the dining hall food in your rear view mirror (well, for the summer).

Freedom

In college, if I wanted to eat dinner at midnight in your bed and then go out, I could. If I wanted to have friends over, I could. If I wanted to go visit a place randomly, I could just go. At home, none of these would occur unless mother approved first.

Procrastination

At school, any student can procrastinate at their leisure. However, at home, not only will the little voice in their brain constantly tell them to do the specific task, but so will their very audible parents.

Weekend Nights

No, you will not throw a rager at home. No, you will not do crazy things at home. No, you will not stay out till the sun comes up at home. And no, you most definitely will not do whatever you want, whenever you please while living under your parents’ roof.

Input on Everything

“You sleep too much,” or “You sure you want to eat that instead of this great looking apple?”or “Hmmm, I don’t like that shirt on you.” Event though you may not ask for input, you will most definitely receive it!

Alone Time

At home, there is no such thing.

Although coming home from living on your own for over year may be hard, coming home also has so many perks. Not only do you get to spend time with your family and old friends, but you also get to unwind from a very stressful school year. So, just remember that all of us college students are going through the same pains (and joys) of being home for the next three months.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
