The Lessons I've Learned From The Ladies Of The 80's

I sing a lot. I don't know if I sound good, but I still do it. It is mostly 80's tunes, but my kids seem to enjoy it. Basically all 80's music encompasses who I am as a person. I hardly know any of today's music, but I can tell you who could dress me up in their love, or how hell is for children. I can tell you that I would let Lita Ford kiss me deadly on any occasion and Crimson and Clover, the Joan Jett rendition, is one of the best. What this means is, that I've learned all of my life lessons from the ladies of the 80's. (Disclaimer: these are songs, verses, ideas, snippets, and titles).

1. Like A Virgin

If you find your soul mate, every day is like a new beginning with that person. My wife is that for me, she makes me feel shiny and new...everyday.

2. Take My Hand It'll Be Alright

I am a good friend, co-worker, spouse, mother, daughter, sister, etc. If you just take my hand, it'll be okay and you'll never be alone - you will always have me. We may not run with the shadows of the night, but Pat Benetar got this one right.

3. I Love Rock-and-Roll

Music is such a huge part of me and my family. My earliest memories of my dad is of his love for music and I am so glad he instilled that in me. I am glad he sang Rod Stewart to me and I am so grateful for his extensive CD collection (was once a huge vinyl collection that he still has).

4. It's Just Another Manic Monday

Almost everyday is another manic Monday, or so it seems when you're a working mother. It's hard, but you just do it and keep living it.

5. Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Yes. We. Do. And I make sure I try everyday. Sometimes there's a much needed karaoke night out, but for all those other times, it's okay to be silly at home and to love your life.

6. What's Love Got to Do With It?

Sometimes it's just about being honest - with yourself and with others. It is important to remember that this is your life and you call the shots. You can't please everyone, but you can please yourself and give yourself the best life you can. Speak up and be happy with your decisions.

7. Here Comes The Rain Again

Annie Lennox couldn't have predicted that the rain would come for everyone at least once. It happens, so does shit. Life throws curve balls all the time, it's how you handle them that makes or breaks you.

8. I Think We're Alone Now

Or at least that's how we should live, happily with no negative outside influences. It's not hard to be friendly, polite and compassionate. It's also not hard to keep your butt in the house if you're angry.

9. We Are a Part of A Rhythm Nation

If you never read a song lyric, please read these. This gives me hope for today. We can get it together as a human race. Maybe every fight should end in a dance battle and maybe that would show how much all lives matter.

10. I Want to Dance With Somebody

With somebody who loves me! I am worth it. I am worth loving. I should be respected, I should be smiled at at the grocery store by a stranger because I do that. I see your worth and I will make you see mine. I will dance through life, while maintaining a budget, taking care of the house, raising brilliant kids, and being a sharp wife. Yes!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
