At the Playstation Experience, Sony announced a massive lineup of games arriving for the Playstation 4 and the Playstation Vita in 2017 and beyond. Games like Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Ni No Kuni: Revenant Kingdom, and Gravity Rush 2 were just some of the major titles to arrive in 2017.
Despite this, it seems as though one game development studio couldn't wait to announce one of the projects it just began development for.
To close out their show at the Playstation Experience, Naughty Dog shocked fans with a new teaser trailer for The Last of Us Part II, featuring the return of fan-favorite characters Elie and Jolie, presumably some time after the events of the original game. In the trailer, Elie sings a gloomy, yet heartfelt folk tale, vowing to kill "every last one of them." when Jolie inquires about her motivations. The teaser clearly set a tone for a mature, potentially cruel revenge story that attempts to tie up some of the loose ends, as we follow our main cast one more time through the post-apocalyptic world filled to the brim with the infected.
Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog, later commented that the new game and the previous one are meant to act "as companions that, together, depict an overarching narrative."
"I played with so many ideas that had different characters and it never felt right," he explained. "The Last of Us is about these two characters specifically. So yes, the Part II is saying this is a complementary story to the first game, but the two together are going to tell this larger tale."
The Last of Us, the predecessor to the newly announced sequel, released back in 2013 to immense critical acclaim after its release, earning a 95 out of 100 on review compilation site Metacritic, with particular praise towards its narrative, beautiful visuals and sound design, among many other factors.
