Why our women's basketball team is the best!

At the University of South Carolina, there is so much to see and do. For students, the opportunities to learn and explore within and outside of the classroom are endless. Right outside the boundaries of campus exists the capital city of Columbia where there is so much fun to be had. Whether it's art, the outdoors, sports, music or food, there is something for you here. For me, food is the number one! But I do very much enjoy the sports teams we have the pleasure of cheering on here at USC. Right now, my favorite would have to be the women's basketball team.

The Lady Gamecocks are currently ranked number 5 in the nation. The top five boasts elite programs like UConn and Baylor and our very own Gamecocks are a part of that. Top five rankings are not something that just came around this year. Ever since Coach Dawn Staley arrived, the program has been on the up and up. In Staley's first season as head coach, the women's basketball team ended with a 10-18 record overall and a 2-12 SEC record. Fast forward to this season, and the Lady Gamecocks are off to a great start with a 12-1 overall record and a 2-0 SEC record so far. In Dawn Staley's eight seasons as head coach, she has managed to obtain an 188-76 overall record.

One reason for the amazing turnaround in our women's basketball program is Coach Staley herself. The best players want to play for the best coach. And Dawn Staley has proven to be just that. She has been named SEC Coach of the year twice. In 2015, Staley was named USA Basketball's Co-National Coach of the Year. She has been called one of the best players to ever play in the WNBA. She even has a day dedicated to her in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Another reason our women's basketball program became this good is a result of recruiting. We've managed to get the best players from other states. We've also managed to get the best players in South Carolina to stay in state. When A'ja Wilson, a Parade All-American and McDonald's All-American in high school decided to stay in her home state and play for Dawn Staley, I knew the future of the program was bright. Now she is first in the number of career blocks in the SEC. But even before then, Alaina Coates, another in state superstar, came to USC. She was also a McDonald's All-American and a Parade All-American in high school. Now she's managed to become First-Team All-SEC and be first in double-doubles in an SEC career. Dawn Staley has also had prolific players such as Tiffany Mitchell and La'Keisha Sutton.

This year's team is something special, with the dynamic guard play of Kayla Davis and Bianca Cuevas-Moore and the excellent defense by A'ja Wilson and Alaina Coates. With Freshman already getting playing time, such as Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Tyasha Harris, the future of Gamecock women's basketball may be just as promising as the present.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
