'Don't Waste Your Wishes': The Killers And The (RED) Campaign
The Line of Best Fit

The holiday season has officially begun. This is the time of year when you are going to be bombarded with Christmas music, whether you like it or not. Most of the time, it’s the same songs over and over, or it’s another pop star covering a classic. It’s just expected at this point, and something we have to accept. Well, The Killers are here to help. In fact, they have been releasing Christmas music for the past 10 years. Fans have been patiently awaited each year’s release in December. This year they’ve decided to put these songs all together on a holiday album called, "Don’t Waste Your Wishes." With ten original tracks and one heartfelt cover of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” this album is bound to be a great addition to your holiday playlist.

The greatest part of this release, along with all of The Killers’ Christmas songs, is that every penny generated from downloads on iTunes is donated to the (RED) Campaign. If you haven’t heard of (RED), it’s a company that was founded by Bono along with Bobby Shriver in 2006. Their mission was to create a program that allowed companies and their consumers to contribute to the fight against AIDS. As stated on the company’s Wikipedia page, “100% of the funds generated by Red partners and events goes to Global Fund programs that provide medical care and support services for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.” So that means that all profits from any product labeled (RED) will go straight to the people that need it the most.

For The Killers, they’ve been delivering a decade of good deeds. Since 2006, the band has been writing and recording original music, along with music videos for each song. They’ve worked alongside friends to create fun, catchy, and sentimental songs. With help from Elton John, Neil Tennant, Dawes, and much more, these songs bring out a sense of community. For a few of these tracks, the band has worked with friend and Vegas local, Ryan Pardey, to create a story through the years. Ryan has been playing a troubled Santa Claus who is after lead singer, Brandon Flowers. The three-part story spans 8 years. The songs involved are, “Don’t Shoot Me Santa,” “I Feel It in My Bones,” and finally, “Dirt Sledding,” all of which are accompanied by fantastically entertaining music videos. Check out part one below.

This year’s song was a cover of “I’ll be Home for Christmas”. However, it wasn’t your typical cover. The song opens with a fireside chat by Brandon Flowers, recounting his childhood move from Las Vegas to a small town in Utah. We end up meeting his 4th grade teacher, Mr. Hansen, who explained the story of “I’ll be Home for Christmas” to Brandon and his classmates, while also delivering an a cappella version. Brandon was so captivated by the story that he asked a now 86-year-old teacher to sing the song with him today. It’s sentimental and a perfect way to round out 10 years of Christmas music.

World AIDS Day is December 1st, but you can download the album now on iTunes. Not only will you be refreshing your Christmas playlist, but you will be joining in a wonderful cause along with so many others. You can download the album here.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
