The Jumbled Thoughts Of A Millennial Who Isn't Democrat Or Republican

It's really hard being in between.

I want to start off this article by saying that this will not be a well organized article. Just like my thoughts on the current state of the United States, these sentences will be all over the place.

Now, let me start off by saying that I have an extremely hard time identifying as either democrat or republican. Like many of peers I'm somewhere smack dab in between.

I love that gay marriage is legal, and that a gay couple can adopt a child. I love that people are becoming increasingly aware and accepting of mental illnesses. I believe that poverty in this country is out of control, and that the cost of education is repulsive. I demand equal pay for women, and for victims of rape to stop being held responsible for the actions someone else committed against them.

However, when it comes to matters of protection of this country I am strongly conservative. Now this is the part of the article where people may start to be offended, and it's something I can't avoid.

I believe there is discrimination in this country but I don't think it's racial — I think it's economic. Now, I'm not arguing that racism doesn't exist. Unfortunately, there are still people who are racist, but most people are not. The problem is that it is almost impossible to move up in classes in the country, so the poor stay poor and the rich stay rich. Of course, there are exceptions to everything, but generally speaking, if you're born into poverty, you will most likely stay in poverty. The reason we see so many minorities in poverty is because they had been oppressed and are still struggling to break out into the middle class. The answer to this though, is not hand outs or an increase in minimum wage. This answer is affordable education. The answer is schools in poor neighborhoods having the same resources as the ones in rich neighborhoods. The answer is college readiness programs, and teachers who believe in their students. The answer is parents who stop blaming teachers for their child's shortcomings, and holding their children accountable for their own success.

I believe that there is an immigration problem in this country. Now I am NOT saying that I am against legal immigration; I am against illegal immigrants. I am against people coming to this country illegally and benefitting from the government when our own citizens are struggling to make ends meet. Now, I am fully aware of how difficult it can be to gain citizenship, and this is not in any way an insult to anyway who has illegally immigrated and is trying like hell to become a citizen; who works and works hard, and loves this country. However I cannot comprehend how we are not actively doing something to ensure our citizens are taken care of first.

I am incredibly disgusted with President Obama. In a recent speech following the RNC, he stated that, "the world has never been less violent" and "we are living in the most peaceful era in human history." I mean was he kidding? Does he ignore the news around the world, in the country he is the president of? Cops are being shot left and right and threats are being made on a regular basis. During a moment of silence for fallen officers at the DNC the audience was yelling, "Black Lives Matter." DURING A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR THE FALLEN OFFICERS. I have never been so disgusted by something like that before, the blatant disrespect for the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect ALL of us EVERY SINGLE DAY. I don't care where you stand on the whole Black Lives Matter versus All Lives Matter — if you did not find that sickening I don't know what is wrong with you.

ISIS is a threat to not only our country, but Europe (as we have seen in recent news) and all over the Middle East. As much as I care about human rights, I really think that finding a way to protect ourselves from a threat such as ISIS is WAY more important than pretending like it doesn't exist and caring about whether or not public places have transgender bathrooms. I have much love for the LGBT community, and believe they should be respected as much as everyone else, but this isn't an issue that should be treated with top priority, sorry not sorry.

Now I know many of you will disagree with me, some just a little, some a lot. And that is OK with me. That's the most beautiful thing about America, how we are free to say what we think, to have our own opinions and still come together as one. In a time when the world is in chaos, we should be coming together as Americans, not dividing ourselves by political parties. In November, no matter who you vote for, you are voting for all of us.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
