Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors. From "Alien" to "Prometheus," Scott has accredited himself with many, many films, and now he can add another one to his list. And this time, the infamous Matt Damon is involved.
Matt Damon is many things, but he's certainly not foreign to different genres of film. His latest project includes the recently common astronaut topic,"The Martian."
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, The Martian tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney, who gets lost in a Martian sandstorm and is thought to be dead. Forced to last 40 million miles from home, he has to find a way to contact Mission Control in Texas, as well as survive until the next mission can arrive to Mars, which is at least four years.
Focusing on Watney, the film goes into the distant relationship between himself, NASA, and the crew. The extreme efforts of NASA and agencies around the world are noted and emphasized by back and forth scenes between NASA and Watney.
Damon, playing Watney, brings a sarcastic raw humor to the film. There is a lot of humor thrown into the somewhat depressing theme. With an ongoing gag of bad disco music, video journals documenting all of Watney's accomplishments and failures.
With an intense plot line, Ridley uses Damon and other stars to ensure the main focus of the film, which could be described using the cliche,
"You're never really alone."
