The Importance Of Self-Love

It may sound corny but the best person to love you is you. Self love is so important in our lives and it is one aspect we all tend to overlook on a daily basis. With work, school, and all the complications that affect us, it is easy to forget to slow down and give yourself some special treatment.

Why is self love so important you may ask? Well, it's important because it is the foundation for how you interact and love other people. If you show yourself nothing but negativity, the people in your life will show you the same treatment. Again, it sounds corny, but if you cannot love yourself, how are you going to love someone else? Without a positive self image, you'll never be able to show love to anyone.

I'm not saying maintaining a positive self image is easy to do all the time. It's so easy to compare yourself to others and put yourself down because you're not pretty enough or smart enough or talented enough. I mean, you are your harshest critic. We are all guilty of tearing ourselves down until we cannot remember anything good and unique that makes us who we are. The key to self love is to remind yourself to stop comparing yourself to others. You are the only you there is and that is more than enough. If you're not yourself, you're depriving the world of your special light and that's just not fair!

It took me a long time to realize how important loving myself was. I was too preoccupied with fitting in and getting everyone's approval. For a long time I needed the green light from the world in order to know that I was doing the right thing. It made life really difficult because I was constantly checking to make sure I wasn't doing anything too out of the ordinary. I lost myself; I wasn't putting me first and was letting any negative comment effect how I lived my life. Then, when I went off to college and had to focus on passing my classes and gaining experience for applying to jobs, I stopped worrying about everyone's opinions. I realized that the only person I had to listen to was me. And, let me tell you, I have felt so much lighter without the weight of the world on my shoulders.

From now on, if you're ever feeling like you're not special or important or anything like that, read this article and list all of the good things about yourself. You are amazing. Don't forget that.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

71
Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
