I never really liked poetry until I came to college. I was never good at it in middle school or high school and I never quite understood its main purpose. I struggled to understand how it was writing and how to do it in the first place. I thought it was a confused form of writing. Although, poetry also really shows a sign of intelligence and the form of a great craft. It is a great art. It's very difficult to be able to put together different words to both flow and sound well.
When I was young, I never really understood poetry. I understand that a poem does not have to rhyme and that it can have a lot of different forms. I thought it was very boring and did not really see its sole purpose at the time. Going through my own life, I have seen that poetry is all around us. Words are all around us and so is the art of poetry. It is present in the music we listen to on an everyday basis, especially in rap music, a genre of music that I like a lot. In rap, there are a lot of twists with words and clever forms of wordplay used. Some of my favorite rappers rap with a nice poetic voice with rhyming ability and clever wordplay. Almost every day now I write down thoughts in my head into my own journal that I hope to turn into work or different poems to display. I started doing this this year in fact, recording my thoughts in a journal. It is both very interesting and exciting to do this in my eyes. A lot of the time I realized I forget thoughts, so it is better to write it down so I have it forever and can go to it at any time. It is sad to see that poets do not really get as much credit as they should because it really is a difficult job filled with tension and plenty of works.
So, being able to write great poetry is not just good, it is a pure gift. A gift like no other that heals myself and keeps me going. Poetry really makes life better and more enjoyable. I look up a lot of different poets, both new and old that I have discovered. I went from a guy hating poetry to absolutely loving it while in college. So here is to poetry, a newfound love of mine.
