Water is one of the most important aspects of our lives. We depend on it for so many things including cooking, cleaning, bathing, and having fun but one of the most important uses for water is staying hydrated.
Water accounts for more than 50% of our body weight and 70% of our bodies are made up of water, which goes to show how important it is to drink water and maintain an adequate level of hydration. Water serves many purposes in the body, most notably; joint lubrication, removal of waste, and temperature regulation. Another important factor to note is how important hydration is for proper brain function.
The brain itself is made up of 85% water and is arguably the most important organ in the human body. According to Dr. Corrine Allen, brain cells need approximately two times more water to function than any other cell in the body. This is due to the fact that our hormones and neurotransmitters deplete more than half of our bodies energy. A study done by the MIT labs reported that a level of 1% dehydration will cause a 5% decrease in cognitive function and a 2% level of dehydration will lead to poorer focus and increased difficulty of mathematical computation.
Water is an integral part of the body especially as it relates to the brain. Imagine if that 2% lack of hydration is stopping you from becoming the next Einstein!
In reality, hydration can have an affect on your ability to problem solve, perform well in sporting events, and conduct your everyday tasks. So, if you're having trouble focusing or remembering everything from last nights cram session, grab a jug of water and crush it.
