Life can be hard. Life can be really hard when you try and go through it alone. Why not have role models? Find someone you feel understands life in a way that aligns with your personal values and beliefs. Let's take our parents out of the equation. For most people, their parents are their mentors, whether they like it or not. I have always looked at my mom and dad and tried to mimic their ideologies and actions. Parents are there for you from day one. So, yes, they count as role models, but we should also seek other influential individuals.
Role models can change throughout your life depending on where you are with everything mentally, physically, and emotionally. Growing up, I had Superman as my first role model. I tried to help out anyone and everyone in whatever way I could. Today, I have several other role models that I look up to and enjoy analyzing. I no longer look to fictitious characters, but I am glad I had Superman in my early years. One that I have recently added to my list and may surprise some is the great comedic actor, Jim Carrey.
I am a senior in college about to embark on my journey out into the real world with wide eyes and a lot of unanswered questions. Recently, I came across a video of Jim Carrey giving a college graduation speech. Throughout this elegant and compelling speech, Jim Carrey gives much insight on life and how he has dealt with the demons he has encountered both internally and externally. Jim Carrey does a very nice job putting his complex thoughts into words. He has philosophical wisdom you don’t get to see when you watch his movies.
Regardless of what your age is, I encourage you to give this speech a listen. You will not be disappointed. Jim Carrey's words can be applied to anyone’s life. Going beyond the speech I have always enjoyed Jim Carrey movies such as "Liar Liar," "V for Vendetta," "Bruce Almighty," and many more. Jim Carrey has a unique sense of humor and has changed many lives just by being funny. Humor is something I have always tried to incorporate in my life as well.
I am glad I now have this speech and other references from Jim Carrey that I can go to any time I need to gain some perspective. I have several other role models that I revert back to often. I firmly believe everyone should have someone they can look to for a better sense of understanding. Below is the video of Jim Carrey's speech. If you don’t have time to finish the whole thing, I encourage you to re-visit the video at another time. Start the speech nine minutes in and watch until the end. Life is hard alone, but when you have mentors and role models to help guide you through, it makes a world of difference.
