So there's this thing called LinkedIn. And it's definitely something you want to invest some of your time in.
Here's why:
1. Through LinkedIn, I've gained real insight into my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to future jobs I could have.
I occasionally scroll through classmate's profiles, just to see what they've been up to (also out of sheer nosiness, if I'm being honest here). Sometimes, the amount of stuff they have on their account scares me. Not only are they double majoring, in a sorority/fraternity, volunteering on the weekends, and can speak seven different languages, but they also have a three internships already under their belt too. Me, on the other hand, I look like I've been twiddling my thumbs throughout my college career compared to them.
2. It's allowed me to connect with people who I wouldn't have connected with before.
You're either really brave or a really big idiot if you friend request a boss or intern coordinator on Facebook. However, it's not quite so weird when you connect with them over LinkedIn, because that's what the site is specifically designed for. Plus, I don't think your (if you're lucky) future employer wants to see you in tons of pictures where you're either lined up with all your friends on the beach or chugging a beer... Granted, I don't know if other people would like to know how much you're getting smashed during the school week (*cough cough* your mom or grandma, probably).
3. Resumes are supposed to be ONE page long.
Especially when you're fresh outta college, folks. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen resumes that are too long get trashed (both figuratively and literally). Use a resume to give the place that you're applying the most relevant experiences and skills you have, and then push them towards your Linkedin profile if they want to know more about you. It looks much more professional, and a lot less egotistical if you do it that way.
4. LinkedIn has this cool thing where you can link or upload all of your work into one neat space.
So, all of your stuff you've worked on and done throughout the years can be found in one compact, efficient area. There's even a preview that lets them see what the project piece is. That saves a lot of time, which will be greatly appreciated.
5. Its format is so simple to use and understand.
Yeah, there's a little bit of personalization that goes into it, like what is the first thing someone sees when they go to your profile, but that's something that changes as you go along in your professional career. Yes, there is the argument that if they all look the same, will mine actually stick out? I think so if you have the right stuff on there. While it is simple and cookie-cutter, it makes it a lot easier for potential bosses to see what you've been up to, as the site is an easy navigation system.
So, what's stopping you from making your free account? Nothing should be. I update mine every once and a while, so I don't forget things I've done, but that's really it. Social media (and yes, we can count this as social media) has become so important in the marketplace. It shows who you are, where you've been, what you've been up to, etc. We live in a world where privacy on the internet is no longer an option. So become an expert before you need to be an expert. You'll thank yourself for this later, I promise.
