Music is a powerful thing.

Music has to be one of the most amazing things that life has to offer. For me, it has always been a way of expressing myself or even my own way of dealing with things. It has impacted my life in such a positive way that I am not so sure that I could live without it.

The cool thing about music is that there is literally a song for every situation. There are songs for partying, break ups and basically anything else that you could possibly think of. The reason that I think this is so important is because it allows you to relate in some sort of way. Whenever I am dealing with something and I hear a song that is even remotely relatable, I will keep playing it over and over. This is because its validation that someone has felt this way or understands what you are going through and whenever you listen to the song its as if they wrote it specifically for you. Sometimes there really isn't words for how I am feeling but an artist can somehow manage to find the words and write them so beautifully that I am just left in amazement. Then there are times that it's not even the words, it's literally how it sounds that is so satisfying.

Music can take you away from anything and also bring so many people together. Think about a concert scenario where there are thousands of people crowded together, all for the same reason. It’s as if within the crowd it is all strangers but as if you are all there together because of the mutual reason which is the music. It can be an escape from the everyday struggle or simply something to help make a great day a little brighter.

I feel as if I have such an emotional tie to music that it can be kind of scary. I am the type of person that listens to a song and tries to take away some sort of overall message or that gets almost attached to certain lyrics. Whenever I hear lyrics that I love its as if they hit down deep with me and stay with me for forever. You know how you may look to friends or others for advice or comfort, well I look to music. It’s a safety blanket for me and has helped me through all periods of my life. Having such a deep connection with music is great because music is something that will live on for forever. Putting everything into words on how music has impacted me seems almost impossible because the love for it is something I cannot really explain.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
