The Irreversible Impact Of Drunk Driving

The Irreversible Impact Of Drunk Driving

About a year and a half ago, time seemed to stop. I came home from school and my mom had tears in her eyes and an unsettled look on her face. She told me that late the night before, our family friend had been killed by a drunk driver. I could not believe her at first, it just seemed impossible for me to understand. I had coped with relatives or family friends passing away before, but never so unexpectedly, so young, and so unjustly.

Keri Anne DeMott was only twenty years old when she left us, and because I am turning twenty in a few months, it is a chilling reminder of how precious life is and how quickly it can be taken away. Keri was always such a loving and kind person and her family wanted to make sure that people became aware of her life.

The Keri Anne DeMott Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to sharing Keri's story with young people to help prevent drunk driving so that other lives are not tragically lost. Bill DeMott has worked with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Florida Highway Patrol to raise awareness about the victims of drunk driving. He also speaks at high schools in central Florida. This certainly has to have an impact on the students, because hearing such a personal story is impossible to ignore. Even though nothing can change what happened in the past, it is important to do everything we can to prevent this from continuing to happen in the future.

Today to keep the memory of Keri Anne DeMott in our hearts, there was a Walk Like MADD event held last year in 2016, and this year in 2017. The main event was held at the University of Central Florida, but my family was able to attend another walk in northern New Jersey, where several of Keri's relatives live.

Even though it was very emotional to hear her cousins and uncles speak, it was a very important time for us to gather together to show our support and love for Keri and her family, and the remembrance of why we need to bring awareness to it.

It is unacceptable for anyone who has drank to get into the driver's seat of a car. Cell phones can be the most simple solution, one call to a friend to pick you up at the end of the night could be the most important decision made in the entire night. A cheap ride home from a service like Lyft or Uber makes it absolutely impossible to make an excuse to drive drunk.

The lives that drunk drivers risk are not only their own, but the lives of every stranger or friend that they may encounter. The drinks that you have could take away someones daughter, best friend, or cousin.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
