On November 20th, model and actress Gigi Hadid co-hosted the American Music Awards. She started the show with a bit of political banter, then Hadid did an impression of the next First Lady, Melania Trump. Pursing her lips and squinting her eyes in an exaggerated fashion, she said in an Eastern-European accent “I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia.” This impression got a bit of a laugh from the audience and some who were watching from home, but it did not bode well on social media.
Many people, mainly Trump supporters, got very upset and were offended by Hadid’s impression and comments. Thousands of people are tweeting about it, saying that Gigi Hadid should be fired from Maybelline for her display of "disrespectful behavior” and should be ashamed of herself “for making fun of our future First Lady.” Along with all of this, people are referring to her as a racist, because Melania is an immigrant.
Model #GigiHadid (with no acting abilities) made a national fool of herself, mocking #MelaniaTrump. Let's see her impersonate #MichelleObama

Hey America. Think it's time to add @Maybelline to boycott list. Plenty of other companies sell great mascara.#gigihadid #ama @MELANIATRUMP

Before I elaborate more on this, I would like to point out that I am in no way condoning Gigi Hadid’s behavior. Making hateful comments and bullying is not acceptable, and it’s not appropriate behavior to present given the platform she has. However, it seems that the backlash from Trump supporters specifically that Hadid is receiving is ridiculous and extremely hypocritical.
Throughout Trump’s campaign, he has spewed extreme hatred and bigotry, and his supporters were either silent about it, or cheered him on. He’s made disparaging remarks about many different demographics, including Mexicans, Muslims, military veterans, and disabled people. He even made accusations about President Obama not being an American citizen.
On top of this, some Trump supporters have participated in the hatred that Trump showed throughout his campaign. Many of them made hateful comments and posts about our current First Lady, Michelle Obama, calling her names like gorilla and ape, and starting rumors that she was actually a man. The irony in this alone should be enough for people to see how wrong this is, but apparently it's not.
The same people who are up in arms about this situations are the same people who participated or ignored the hatred that Trump perpetuated. More often than not, people who identify as a Republican ridicule liberals and those alike for “constantly being offended” by the things that are said or done. I can recall several times that I have faced this ridicule when it came to talking about the rights of people of color or those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. However, as soon as someone attacks them or retaliates, they demand that they have a “safe space” to protect them from the backlash that they are facing. This is not to say that all Republicans are bad, and that all liberals are right. I believe that Gigi Hadid’s behavior shows that there are bad eggs on all parts of the spectrum. However, this situation brings to light the hypocrisy in a lot of parts of the Trump campaign and in his supporters.
In the end, Hadid quickly apologized for her behavior at the AMA’s, which I believe says a lot about her integrity. But, I would like to remind everyone to keep in mind you shouldn’t dish out what you can’t take. I don’t condone hateful behavior, but people need to remember that you shouldn’t perpetuate what you can’t handle.
