The Hope of Tomorrow

We are more than the trials we face.

The Hope of Tomorrow

Life is a funny thing. We all have these expectations on how life is supposed to be or at least how we think it should be but often times our expectations fail. The things we imagined for ourselves and for those we care about don't happen and we feel lost. So we hold onto hope that something better is coming, that life has more meaning than the things that hurt us. We need to believe that there is something more to this life than our pain and loss because if there isn't than what's the point? Every person in some way has felt this hopelessness because when you are faced with a trial it's sometimes hard to see the bigger picture.

Nothing in life is permanent. Every trials and problem will eventually pass. Even if you can't see the end know that there is always hope. Sometimes its so easy to let fear win because it consumes us and shakes us to our core but love and hope are stronger than fear. Giving into to fear or sadness or anger is not the answer because then we get stuck. We are never truly able to move on and we live our lives stuck in that moment. We all have so much potential to live our live stuck in a moment. Life has to go on eventually because time goes on.

There are some trials that take time but that doesn't mean they never end. Its ok to let yourself feel all those negative emotions but don't let them control you forever. Certain trials never truly leave, they stay with us like a shadow but they fade over time. You have to give yourself time and find solace in others because we really are stronger together. Some things will always be apart of us but they don't have to define us. We are more than a singular event in our lives. Every person is made up of a sum of their experiences, some may be good and some bad but its the combination of them that make us into who we are now.

Tomorrow's a new day and a new day means new hope and new hope means change and change means endless possibilities. So no matter how bad today you have to remember that there is still tomorrow. No crucible lasts forever. Crucibles are meant to test us and help shape us for that new day. Just like caterpillars don't fear their cocoons but rather they allow it to change them willingly. So embrace your crucible because it will make you into the person you are meant to be. Humans are much stronger than you think. We have overcome so much and will continue to thrive. You can choose to rise from your crucible because there is always hope for tomorrow. So let everything wash over you and mold you like waves upon the sand. Just know that this isn’t the end and you will survive because you are not alone in this.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
