The Honest College Essay I Never Submitted
Campus Riot

The essay of all essays. The essay that is in the back of your mind throughout high school. What will I write about? Is my life interesting enough? Is writing about how Abraham Lincoln is my idol too basic? Well guess what, once you get into college, you never think about it again (at least, I did not). The summer going into my senior year, I am pretty sure that my mother bothered me almost everyday to start writing mine. The problem was that I had no idea what to write about. You always hear those stories about really cool college essays that stand out from the rest. I could not think of a single thing that happened in my life that was earth shattering or that would catch the eye of an elite college. I was pretty mediocre to be honest. Now, I know that we are all unique in some way, but that is hard to put on paper in 1,000 words. Long story short, I was fed up with being constantly told to write it so I wrote the truth about who I was in the eyes of a college. I give you the essay I wrote, but never sent. Please excuse my ignorant 18-year-old, honest self...

A True College Essay by Meaghan Barry

I sit in my bed at 12:00 a.m. having just watched one of America’s greatest films, "The Breakfast Club." No, college, I am not in any way thinking about my future--well maybe the immediate future, but not next fall. Teens complain today about how everyone is fake toward each other, but in reality the most fake you can get is the college process. I am, for once, going to be real with you.

Okay, so you want me to write a creative 1,000 word essay about how I standout from the rest. Well guess what…I do not. I am a Caucasian, wealthy, prep school gal and my entire family is healthy and happy…for the most part. I am sorry I am not coming up with some creative theme to write about my success just to fill the void….I have never faced oppression. I am the majority.

To answer the question of “what can you bring to this school?” here is my answer. Nothing. Oh sure I will get involved in the events at school and I will be a varsity athlete, but no, you will not call me back 10 years from now to ask me to give the commencement speech. No, you will not email me to say that I received an alumni award either. I can promise you that I will not in any way take away from the school or make it look bad. I may party occasionally, but I am sure partying is not a foreign idea to the university. College, not every one of your incoming freshmen is going to be ideal. Hey… here is to being a filler for the class of 2019.

P.S. Just a bonus, I can pay full tuition.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
