Dear 16-year-old me,

This letter may take you by surprise but yes it’s me, or should I say you? If you're reading this you are just about to graduate high school and your life is about to fly by. Don’t worry life is ok, you are healthy to my knowing and a junior in college. I decided to write you this letter because this year has been hard for you.

You’re 20 years old, living on your own in a beautiful apartment in Greenville, North Carolina. Yes, Greenville you choose East Carolina University and not any of those other colleges that sent you acceptance letters.

You need to brace yourself because you will make some questionable choices and see a ton of heartbreak through your teen years into your twenties. Your life is not the fairy tale you envisioned when you were eight-years-old. In fact, it is a nightmare at times. The year 2017 you will welcome a beautiful niece and lose your grandfather to cancer.

Yes, you read it right, the big C. Cancer and a new baby will be the two big surprising events that will bring your family together. Cancer, unlike any other disease your family will face, will be the one that hurts the most. Your grandmother suddenly died in 2015, and her husband soon followed.

Did your heart just drop when you figured out which set of grandparents I am mentioning? That's ok, breathe. You got this. It was hard but somehow you got through it. You need to change your perspectives though. Call your grandparents more. Stay connected with friends, especially work friends. You will also lose someone so special to you in a month or so. But again you'll get through it, death will soon become something you will become numb to.

I am not writing this letter to cause you pain but to ensure you that bad things will happen in your life. But life will not always be bad for you. You will find love, joy, new friends, and new family members. You remained on Dean’s list your entire time of college, you’ve met new friends and peers, and discovered artistic hidden talents you have never noticed. You will start designing and taking further steps into photography.

Lastly, little me, you have so much to offer you just have to take more chances in life. Similar to other people in college you sometimes watch opportunities past you by without taking full advantage of them. Change that! Step outside your comfort zone and definitely apply to ECU newspaper design freshman year! Keep believing in your dream. You will make it.

Much love,

An older you.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

StableDiffusion

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!
