The Hate U Give is a new Young Adult novel that has taken the (book) world by storm. I recently read and reviewed the book for my blog The Graduated Bookworm Blogger, and honestly I still can't get it out of my mind!
This novel is inspired by Black Lives Matter, and a lot of real stories and themes. Once you start reading it, you kind of can't stop yourself, as more twists, and intense scenes appear, causing you to really think about society and your own views.
While reading I loved and appreciated the fact that the writing was authentic. I know many people say they didn't really like the writing style, or that it was poorly written, however I feel like yes it could have been stronger, but the way that everything was written had more of an impact than something that would normally have been so "Clean" or "Formal". When you're reading about Starr and her life, it's exactly as she should say things. You see where she struggles to be herself and a cleaner version for the people she goes to school with, and in the end I really loved how her own personality came through.
Seriously though, this book definitely touched a lot of taboo topics, or topics that people have never been comfortable to really discuss because it ends out more negative than good. I personally feel like this is a book that should be used in schools for learning, regardless of the language, because let's be honest, this is society today...
Angie Thomas has found a way to use past and present life to bring you this new novel that breaks through barriers, race, language, and above all, love and family. The characters that were created and greatly impacted the main character's life showed just how important it is to have those people there for you, but to also be comfortable being yourself and being confident enough to speak your mind, and to not let anyone use your own words against you.
If there was ever a book that I would recommend reading, it would be this one!!
I've rated this book 4.5/5
