I was told that I could be whatever I wanted in the world, anything at all, so I decided, in my senior year, that I would love to be a graphic designer.
I thought it was my calling, and I wasn't too awful at photoshopping.
What I didn't know, was that it wasn't just photoshopping random pictures together.
(I photoshopped this picture in my computer graphic class in high school. Birds with arms, am I right?)
But, this isn't just a quick read about how I enjoy giving birds human arms.
This is a quick read about what you might encounter if you pursue a career in the field of graphic design.
The first thing I heard when I informed people of my major was something along the lines of "How do you expect to find a job". If you are one of those people, let me give you a scenario.
You're driving down a highway, probably consumed by road rage. You look to the side of the street and see aluminum bars and what looks like a platform. You look a little higher and there is the platform, still growing taller. And at the top? A very clever billboard, advertising how you can save fifteen percent or more on car insurance. An advertisement.
This is only one of the things I could create in my field.
I could work at Google as a visual designer, or I could create the wonderful website for your future business.
Me: 1, People hating on this field: 0
I never thought I would have access to so many different programs. Going into it, I thought I was going to go back and forth between photoshop and Microsoft Word/ Pages. To my surprise, there are so many programs that I get to mess with and that's just a part of my job!
InDesign: Literally the layout king for postcards, ads, and everything else
Photoshop: Altering, cropping and combing photos
Bridge: Stores all the photos you might need to create a successful project
Illustrator: Allows you to create graphics, illustrations and typography
And that's just a few of the programs available to you.
The best thing that revolves around graphic design, are the people I meet and have met. I have met some wonderful, creative people. My graphic instructors are fun, easily approachable, and great to converse with. They have stories of the field and what to expect. They, and the people interested in taking the same route I am, are just outstanding.
The art is fun, but the people are better.
These reasons, and others(trust me, the list goes on and on), are just the little things that make this career seem so wonderful.
