Dear GOP: Stop Blaming “Political Correctness” For the Division Your Bigotry Caused

Condemning PC Culture is just an excuse for you to continue the cycle of oppression.

Dear GOP: Stop Blaming “Political Correctness” For the Division Your Bigotry Caused
@HouseGOP

From the president-elect declaring America does not have time for “political correctness” to professional ranter Tomi Lahren, it is certain that a staple of rightwing media is blaming “PC culture” for the division in our country. Basically, if I received a dollar every time I read or watched Republicans blame PC culture and political correctness for this chaotic moment in American history, I myself would be part of the one percent.

Political correctness is a phrase you Republicans obsessively cling to almost as much as your corrupted media rhetoric and participation trophy theories. You parade PC culture as an attack against the “good ole’ days” to poorly justify your unwillingness or inability to progress- not only progress as a country, but also as individuals.

PC Culture is not (and never was) a product of irrational sensitivity or spoiled millennials, but an attempt to advocate for human rights, empathize with marginalized communities, and tolerate those who hold differing ideals.

There is no denying America’s history has always been tumultuous, violent, and never great for minorities and the oppressed. Native Americans were killed, displaced, and forced onto small reservations. People of Color propelled America’s economic wealth as slaves and once freed, experienced endless discrimination. Asian-Americans were placed in US internment camps. Even women were denied body autonomy until Roe v. Wade and the criminalization of marital rape passed in the 1970s. Unfortunately, almost 2 centuries later, every single one of these communities are still battling for basic human rights. This is no surprise- history repeats itself when you choose to ignore it.

Every time you dismiss the painful struggles of minorities as over-sensitivity, you alone contribute to the divisiveness in our country. Every time you invalidate the injustices others experience and categorize it as irrelevant PC Culture, you perpetuate racism, sexism, and oppression.

Most have the tendency to shut down when conversations are uncomfortable or when they feel culpable; mentally listing muddled excuses instead of admitting your actions have physically, emotionally, or economically injured another. Your party believes apologizing or admitting wrongdoing is a sign of weakness, and your Achille’s heel will be your refusal to listen to ALL Americans: beyond your skin tone, wallet, and belief system.

Those of us you condemn as politically correct have just developed the skills you lack: empathy, compassion, and tolerance. Acknowledging the hurt and disadvantages of marginalized groups is what will make America a strong, united country.

Disparaging PC culture is just a euphemism for your bigotry; your racist dog whistle has rung out loud and clear.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
