I've said it before, I'll say it again; I'm from a small town in Upstate New York. Typically, in Upstate New York, we don't have national media coverage, unless something really cool or really terrible happens (see Dannemora Prisoners, or Zach Bogosian getting drafted). Aside from that, there's really not much else that really can be said for media coverage, except for our local papers.
In St Lawrence County, each town (or cluster of towns) has their own local newspaper. But, above all, we have a much larger intercounty newspaper that serves as our main source of information, more or less.
Boy, does it give us a lot of information.
Typically, local newspapers give us everything that we could ever need in information, and it caters specifically to us, as a group of people situated in an area that doesn't ever see even statewide coverage.
Obituaries, local accomplishments, local pride, events, high school sports, weddings, laws, blotter. These papers have everything that you could ever think that could be important to our small town is contained within these papers. And even better, when you don't have time to pick up your local paper, say you're running late, and you can't get the physical copy of the paper! But, it's okay, your local paper probably has an awesome website that you can look at while you're at work!
To me, a local newspaper is something that can really solidify pride in a community. Typically, you see everything that anyone in a community could ever need to know, or be proud of. Local people, who have the same interests and beliefs that you all have, are working hard to furnish something that is read and consumed by the same group of people that understands what it truly is like to live in that area.
So, please, support and look at your local newspaper. It's everything that you could ever need to know about your community, and as a writer myself, I admire the work that goes into it.
Kudos to all these writers. It's excellent work.
