What Have We Done To Our Planet?

The change created by humans.

What Have We Done To Our Planet?

Our world is changing and not entirely for the better. The climate is changing, ecosystems are being scarred, the ozone layer is disappearing, species of flora and fauna will never be seen again, and these are only a small handful of changes that are happening to our world. Earth is gradually decaying and, unfortunately, we all know the cause. Us. Humans.

We are the one's that are changing the world, and let me tell you, despite all the "good" we've done, it is nowhere close to the damage we have caused. In all honesty, I am honestly surprised that the damage we have done has not already drained the Earth of its resources and turned it into a barren wasteland in which no life can exist. Much like Mars. Hmmm... Anyway, potential life on other planets conspiracy aside, we have had a huge impact on Earth and that impact is not as positive as you may believe.

For starters, due to over hunting, deforestation, pollution, insensitivity in regards to waste disposal, oil spills, and any other form of willful destruction, many, many, many, many species of both flora and fauna have disappeared from this Earth with no chance of ever coming back. Heck, in 2016 alone, we have lost the West African black rhinoceros, the Mariana mallard, the Pinta Island tortoise, the thylacine, or Tasmanian wolf, and many others.

We humans have hunted them for their furs, horns, meat, or just for the sheer thrill that someone gets from hunting without a care. We have destroyed their homes with our need for innovation and expansion without a care. So my question is; when will we start to care?

What will it take for us to realize that we are destroying this world, our home? Do we need to start losing household dogs and cats before we realize what we have done? Do our homes need to be bulldozed over for us to understand what we are doing? Will it take our children getting sick because of air pollution to see that we are killing this world? When will we understand?!

Do not get me wrong, humans have made incredible things that we used to only dream about. Heck, I am writing this very article on such a creation, but at what cost? Are all of these technological advancements worth what we have put the world through? I am not saying that we should stop creating and evolving, it is human nature to evolve and better oneself after all, but could we just tone it down a little? From an early age we are taught that our actions have consequences, so we need to think about the risks that comes with our own evolution.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
