The Godfather is one of the best-selling novels (to this day) written by Mario Puzo. I took the liberty to read this majestic book, and I learned a few lessons that apply to my life.

1. I'll make him an offer he can't refuse

At this point of the novel, when the Vito Corleone said this to his godson Johnny (a hit sensation singer; many say Johnny Fontane is Frank Sinatra in this novel), he gave him assurance to help him with his career in the movie industry. The Corleone Family are well respected, and many should know that the Godfather always has done right and only asks for your loyalty and friendship. Once The Godfather does a favor you, it is time for you to take your part. Personally, I can relate.

2. Friendship is everything. Friendship is more than talent. It is more than the government. It is almost the equal of family.

The Godfather is wise when he said this. The importance of making friendships is a delicate manner. It is important to choose your friends that care about you and will be there at your side. With good friends, they will always be in your life. However, bad friends, that you have to eliminate and put your distance from. Choose friends that share similar interests and aspirations as you.

3. Great men are not born great, they grow great.

To be a great man, one has to go through heavy experiences that make them see truly what is life out there. Great men have to be the leader and show they are strong and courageous to protect what they love and influence others. Don Vito Corleone proved his success when he had to save his family. When he was younger, his own father and brother were killed by the Mafia. He saw death and fear at an early age, and so he came to America as a young boy, fleeing for his life. He is the type of man who listens. Simply by listening and not letting your anger take over you, you sustain control.

4. Never hate your enemies, it affects your judgment.

Your hate blindfolds you not to see the whole picture completely. That is when your enemy can take advantage of you. Always stand firm on both feet and do not show your weakness. Do not let others see your judgment. Make yourself be seen as fierce and never take anyone's opinion of you as personal. It is all a matter of business. You know what you have to do, then do it. Take the Godfather's advice on this.

5. A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man.

Selfish men out there and still much more to come. Sonny Corleone is the Godfather's first son, and he is having an affair with Lucy Mancini. Although Sonny is married and has children, he has an affair with another woman known to have a bad reputation. It is true; a real man has to spend time with his family. Family is important. Family will never leave your side. To give that up and give it away, makes you no real man.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
