While many have concerns about the genetic modification of food, we all enjoy the convenience of eating fruits without the seeds.
How does this happen? Cross-Breeding!
The basic gist of it is that breeders cross a haploid fruit (having a single set of unpaired chromosomes.) and a diploid fruit (containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.) to get a triploid fruit (containing three homologous sets of chromosomes).
A triploid fruit typically contains sterile seeds meaning the seeds are present but not fully developed to reproduce. It is completely safe and convenient to eat!
Note: next time you get a seedless watermelon, look for those little white seed/ strand looking things; those are the seeds.
Isn't genetic modification the best?
