Tinder. The infamous dating/hookup app. Tinder has an estimated 50 million users, 10 million daily active users.
Tinder is a game we all like to play, but no one likes to admit it.
Tinder is entertaining. It's fun. It's addicting. Swipe right. Swipe left. So many possibilities. The attention, the instant gratification, the self-esteem boost, the pick-up lines galore. We love it, we hate it, and yet we still keep swiping. The swipe is a powerful thing; at just the flick of a finger you have a new match. Some take tinder seriously, some take it as a joke. Some think it's weird and creepy, others think it's just another way to meet people in 2016.
Though tinder reflects our society's hookup culture, is having a tinder such a bad thing? Why is it that no one likes to admit that they have tinder? Should people have to make up how they met if they met on tinder? There's a stigma with dating and tinder because of the judgment and embarrassment associated with it. Should we be ashamed for having a tinder or is it just another way to meet people in 2016? Is it a good way to kill time and hook up with whoever you want or could you find someone you have a meaningful connection with? Did we "find a love in a hopeless place?"
Tinder is a game based on attraction. We aren't judging people based on their personalities, we are judging people based on their appearance. These are more than the faces of strangers. These are people. People with stories. People with thoughts, feelings, hopes, and desires just like yours and mine. Swipe with caution at the pros and cons of tinder.
