The Friendship That Saved Me

Friendship is like pissing your pants, everyone can see it but only you can feel the warmth inside.

People say it is rare in life to meet that one person that knows you inside and out. The person that isn't your parents or significant other, that knows everything from your monthly women problems, to your sex life and your favorite candy. You call each other's parents "mom and dad" and walk in each others house without even knocking. I met that person in first grade. 14 years later we are one hour apart spending frequent hour phone calls complaining about life, constantly tagging each other in memes on Facebook, and she is still my best friend.

Teachers always told me I wouldn't remain friends with my classmates through middle school and high school and people would always say once we go off to college we will make new friends. Well, that's not the case here. I mean, I made new friends of course but no one could ever take Olivia's spot. We have been through so much together from huge family losses and struggles, high school heartbreaks (Olivia if you are reading this, remember eyebrows, and that guy that was a senior when we were freshman?) a few minor friendship bumps that, of course, our other friends and even our family told us we were being dumb and to suck it up. We shared a twin size bed and woke up with bruises because, let be honest, who has a successful experience sharing a twin size bed if you are older than five? There were a few nights that I'm pretty sure should have been illegal and all the inside jokes that come with years full of high school dances, band camp, late night walks, and smuggling McDonalds into movie theaters.

With having a best friend comes her family, and words can't describe them. Her dad is a truck driver and has a mouth to prove it, but that is was makes him so funny and sarcastic. It doesn't matter how bad of a day or what situation you are in he can turn everything around. Her mom is that mom you can talk to about everything you don't want to talk to your own mom about and feel completely comfortable. It really is like they are "one of the kids" but not in a creepy parent way. I'm so lucky to have them as a second family and know that if shit ever hits the fan or my cardboard box home on the side of the road ever blows away or gets taken by the trash man I can always crash on their couch. I'm so lucky to have her as my best friend because no matter what time of day, or how bad of a date one of us could be on, she has saved my ass for the last 14 years and I can't wait to see what we get into next.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
