The Friends You Find In College

The Friends You Find In College
Christine Weeks

A month into college.

As crazy as that may sound, this is most of us fall in time on the journey that is the next four years of our lives. With this fact, I see it in front of my own eyes and with the many shared photos friends post that friend groups begin to form. The people we can’t live without today were strangers a mere couple weeks of even days ago. The reality is daunting but true.

As these friend groups evolve, each one is marked with its unique range of personalities and characters that make them so special. I’m writing this to share with you the range of crazy personalities that make up my friends so far. If anything, I hope it will make you laugh and remind you of your own friends.

Here it is:

The friend that always puts a smile on everyone’s face:

This is the friend with uninhibited happiness and sense of humor. They never fail to have an entertaining story that makes everyone at the table laugh so hard you want to choke on your pizza, a new dance move from their “square dance” class, and are always willing to have a good time. This is the friend you can catch singing on any table, always with a smile across their face. If you’re lucky like me you even get to go on wild hunts through a field at seven in the morning to find their phone with them.

The friend who knows how to work hard and play hard:

This friend is a must in every group. They are the ones that remind you why you’re at school in the first place considering it is well, school after all. Despite the hours this friend can put in working, they can play equally and if not even more than they can work. One minute they’re writing an essay and the next you’re dancing away at a super Saturday obsessing over they’re new cup they order. They’re work hard play hard mentality means they’re not only there for you to hear a corny guest speaker, but also right by your side while heading out to have another memorable night out.

The friend that just floats their own boat:

This is the friend that does whatever whenever they want. Much like the humorous friend, they’re relaxed go with the flow attitude keeps the group moving and always entertained. They’re the partner in crime and the friend that will do anything and everything they set their mind to. With this, they are willing to try anything with you to seize all that the campus you know and love.

The friend from home:

Some people have these, some people don’t. Luckily, I have a variety of these friends. They are the ones who know the you beyond these four weeks. They have been there for you before and they are there now, as they will be for the next four years. In return, I’m always there for them.

The friends that we don’t even know yet:

While yes, an entire whole month of school has passed, it is only one month out of the many to come. Aside from the funny friend, the studier, the free spirit, and the constant and true one, there are so many more to come. In the next four weeks these lists can double, even triple in size as college exposes us to new personalities, friends and experiences.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
