To The Friend Who Became My Sister

You can’t pick your family. We all know this to be true. Even so, I wouldn’t trade my family for the world. I have wonderful parents and an amazing little sister that I love more than anything. However, sometimes, you meet someone in life who you could’ve sworn was meant to be a part of your actual family. A friend who you become so close to, that it just seems natural to consider them a member of your family. Maybe sometimes, you can pick your family.

I remember moving to a brand new town back in middle school. My first day in my new house I noticed that there was a girl that looked around my age who lived in the house across the street, and I couldn’t wait to meet her. It didn’t take long for this neighbor to become my friend. Soon after, we were absolutely inseparable. Growing up is hard to do and in going through it together, she became my very best friend. Riding our bikes around the neighborhood for hours every night in the summer, having week-long sleepovers where all we ate was pizza, and secretly dying our hair purple behind my mom’s back turned into crying over our first breakups, graduating from high school together, and planning our futures. We’ve seen each other at our very lowest points, and been there for the best. Somewhere throughout all of this, my best friend became my sister.

Just because we aren’t actual blood-related sisters, doesn’t mean we don’t ever fight. Even though it doesn’t always seem like it, fighting is a good thing. It means someone cares enough about you to tell you when your wrong. When you make a mistake, friends will be there for you to make you feel better, but sisters will be the ones to help you understand what you did wrong and help you to fix it. That is the key to becoming a better person, and that’s what family is for. People change people, and I believe that life has a funny way of bringing you exactly what you need, when you need it.

We needed each other to become the people we are today.

You have always been the toughest, funniest, most genuine, beautiful, and sincere person that I know, and if everyone was a little more like you, I think the world would be a better place. I know that my life is.

A sister is someone who you only want the best for. Someone whose success is just as exciting for you as it is for them. Someone for whom you would do anything and nothing they could ever do could make you stop loving them. Sisters are with you for life, and there’s no one I would rather have by my side than you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
