A movement happening among women all over the world recently gained momentum when Kiran Gandhi ran the London Marathon right after her period had just started, without a tampon or pad, bleeding freely the entire race. Since then, this act has gained a lot of criticism and a lot of praise from many different audiences.
What this "free bleeding" business entails is refusing to wear any sort of restriction while menstruating; meaning no inventions are used to oppress the blood flow occurring during the bleeding cycle of a women's period. The term "free-bleeding" was coined because that is basically what the act is: a women bleeding freely.
There are two main reasons behind this action that has been demonstrated by many feminist women and groups.
- A women's body and menstrual cycle should not be considered "unclean," "disgusting," or "gross," as it is a natural event that women's body has.
- A women's menstural cycle shouldn't be scorned by man-made products like tampons or pads because the cycle is a part of life for females and nature intended for it to be seen not hidden or shunned.
Take this movement how you will and decide for yourself if you think it's a cool idea or a weird radical trend. I (as a girl myself) for one, give enormous props to the women who do it, even though I would never try it out.
