Belle Isle: The Forgotten Gem

When you drive down Jefferson Avenue from Downtown Detroit, about 10 minutes down, you see the McArthur Bridge to the right. Over the bridge, about halfway between Detroit and Windsor, is an island. Over 900 acres of land is the island of Belle Isle. Officially opened in 1845, Belle Isle is the country's largest city island park, and, as of last year, is now Michigan's 102nd state park.

After spending so many years visiting this lovely island and leaving with wonderful memories and after hearing how many of my friends have never been to Belle Isle, I wanted to share Belle Isle's beauty and the wonderful experiences and activities it has to offer. With nature trails, golfing, fishing, five miles of shore view, a nature zoo, and several historic sights, there is no getting "bored" at this magnificent gem.

The James Scott Memorial Fountain: If you have never visited Belle Isle and only have a few minutes, the James Scott Memorial Fountain is the place to go. Made from white marble, the fountain is carefully sculpted and is a beautiful piece of art.

The Belle Isle Aquarium: The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest aquarium of the United States. About 1,000 fish are housed in this historic place which makes up 113 species.

Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory: Another one of the country's oldest gems, the conservatory houses thirteen acres of plants. It is yet another wonderful sight that gives you lasting memories and gorgeous scenery.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum: This museum is full of maritime history of the Great Lakes. According to the Detroit Historical Society, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum has the world's largest known collection of model ships!

The Belle Isle Nature Zoo: An extension of the Detroit Zoological Society's Detroit Zoo, this nature zoo has many different critters that can be seen around the Downriver area. They also have fallow deer that used to roam the island, but are now under the care of the nature center; you can feed them too!

Livingston Memorial Lighthouse: This lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the nation constructed of marble! It is located at the north end of Belle Isle.

Other things to see on Belle Isle are the Detroit Yatch Club, the giant slide, the golf range, and the beach! Even if you feel the need to get in a work out, just walking around the perimeter or going through the nature trails will give you a scenic place to get in shape!

With all of these options and Belle Isle's rich history, why wouldn't you visit this great place? I feel that it has been forgotten over the years, and now that it is a state park, it is put back on the radar. So if you are visiting Detroit, need a place to relax, or need a place to do something, go to Belle Isle! You will leave with memories and a feeling of happiness!

    Toilet Troubles

"So, usually I would never go on a Tinder date but when you are out with girlfriends and a hot Bosnian guy says he wants to hang with you and his friends, you oblige. We head to their apartment and when I realized I may pee my pants if I don't find a bathroom soon. I ask for the bathroom and a friend of my tinder date shows me to it and said in all seriousness that I was not allowed to flush the toilet under ANY circumstances. Having a few drinks--or five--I relieved myself to, nevertheless, flush the toilet. Within seconds, his bathroom was flooded and towels were laid out everywhere to catch the toilet water. To say the least, we were not invited back"
