We’ve all been there. It’s the end of the semester and you’re not staying on campus for the summer. Maybe you’ve just had your last exam and you have 24 hours to get out of your dorm. You’ve maybe made an attempt at unpacking but honestly, you were too busy studying and saying goodbye to friends to make more than a shallow attempt at packing. You have a room full of stuff and it needs to be gone soon and it’s a little overwhelming but your friends want to go get ice cream to celebrate the end of the semester. Then it hits.
Denial
You don’t have to do it now. You have plenty of time to get packed. Twenty-four hours is a lot of time and you’ve been pulling all-nighters every other night for two weeks. What’s one more. You definitely don’t have to pack and you can definitely go get that ice cream.
Anger
How could your friends do this to you? They knew you had to pack. Why did you do this to yourself? Why do you have so much stuff anyway? Why is packing so hard? Why don’t shoes ever fit into boxes well? Why would you ever need so many extra pens?
Bargaining
Maybe if you bribe your roommate with the chocolate you found in your desk she’ll help you pack. Maybe someone in your hall has some extra boxes. If you finagle your shoes just right maybe the box won’t break.
Depression
There’s no way this is getting done. Absolutely none. You might as well lie on your bed and waste away until the residential advisors come around to see why you haven’t checked out of your room yet.
Acceptance
Okay. It’s not that bad. You’ve got a couple of hours. You’re not really close to done but it’s possible and you really don’t have any other options. You can make it through this. The shoes will fit together somehow and at the end of it all you get to go home and avoid thinking about school for three months. It’s go time.
