The topic of who holds the trophy for greatest composer has long been debated. People sway between a number of names, and they always seem to have good reason for why they pick whomever they do. That is why I will never assert this list as definitive, nor as absolute. Here is what I think are the five greatest composers ever:
1. Ludwig Van Beethoven
This man has single-handedly shaped almost all Western music. Sure, the introduction and creation of chromaticism owes itself to those who shaped music theory, but I think it is safe to say he really perfected it. He paved the way for absolutely brilliant works, composers, even pianists and he did so even while going deaf!
2. Johann Sebastian Bach
His music might not be as popular among younger crowds, but any musical scholar knows his tremendous influence. He practically finalized Western music theory and for this he is one of, if not the greatest.
3. Franz Schubert
With one of the most extensive collections of works in musical history, one is bound to know a number of his tunes (maybe even without realizing it). With great reason too! His music is utterly heavenly.
4. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
A theme of this list is to honor those who have not only composed beautiful works but are responsible for changing musical composition and developing and shaping music as we have it today. Thus we have Mozart, who is very much responsible for implementing dynamics with a more complex musical theory and thus allowing for the diversification of music in general
5. Frederic Chopin
This man epitomizes the pure emotion that may be wrought through the piano and music in general. His intense and soulful melodies and piano works have brought to us a new generation of musical imagery.
