Two girls with a dream to inspire change.

The Fitness Movement You NEED to Know About

Have you ever felt like you're not good enough because of what you see in the mirror? Have you ever worried that there's nothing you could do to change it? That you're just stuck the way you are? And then you worry that pretty much every fitness program out there is all about obtaining body-builder muscles, and shredding pounds like it's a piece of cake (when let's face it, all you want to do is EAT a piece of cake). Throughout the fitness industry, there is so much emphasis put on using the right supplements/protein powders, counting all the right macros and lifting the heaviest weight; but what about those of us that just want to feel good about our body, and stay healthy while we do it?

Well, fortunately there is a new fitness program unlike anything seen before that has just changed mine and your world! If you try it and don't like it, I'll personally refund you your misery. That's how much I believe in this program.

The project is called "Fitness at Peace", and it was developed by two college students, Sarah Francati and Bridget Carney, with the intention of bringing about a new way of catering to people's fitness goals where they saw immense gaps in the industry. Sarah is a Junior Nursing Major and Bridget is a Senior Psychology and Media and Communications Major, both at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. Both of these incredible girls have triumphed over struggles with body image and mental illness and talk in their blogs about body positivity and what they do to work past the demons in their own heads trying to get them down.

"Fitness at Peace" is an all-encompassing program. It is not just focused on building a stronger physical you, but also a stronger mental you. Sarah Francati, one of the two founders, faced a long and treacherous battle with anorexia nervosa and talks in her blogs on the project's website about how a huge piece of her recovery has been turning herself to fitness to learn to see her body in a different light. Facing her own struggles, Bridget Carney, cofounder of "Fitness at Peace", also battled this horrible illness and offers this powerful statement on their website's blog;

"The insecurity that I experienced both internally and externally followed me on a roller coaster ride for the next year and a half, it still follows me to this day. But the way to handle insecurity is to take care of yourself. Handling insecurity is best taken care of when you do things to make you love yourself. You exercise, you eat a whole and balanced diet. You laugh, sleep, and enjoy every moment. You are grateful for how able your body is and how healthy you are." -Bridget Carney

These girls, both tremendous heroes in their own right, have overcome challenges not many people ever decide to tackle head on and they now are turning their darkest times into hope for so many other people. Their program chooses to focus on, as Bridget stated, balancing life with progress. This comes with eating a balanced diet, which the girls offer as an option on their website where meal planning can be purchased, and working out at a steady pace that is right for your body.

Their guides focus on six-weeks of strength training with incorporated cardio. The workouts are done in what is known as "pyramid workouts" in order to slowly move toward increasing weights to strengthen and tone muscles, rather than solely focusing on weight loss. Included in the six-week package of guides are six-weeks of workouts, a goal chart for tracking both physical and mental goals and progress, a scheduling tool for scheduling workouts around everyone's very busy lives, access to demo videos, a private Facebook support group, an interactive journal to help combat negative and intrusive thoughts and recipes shared by the girls to kickstart a healthy diet.

The world is already putting so much pressure on how we look, yet very rarely is it addressed how much pressure we put on ourselves to feel "okay" with what we see.

The game is changing and these two warrior women are at the forefront of the movement; don't get left behind.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
