Why I Dread The First Week Of Classes

Everyone has something they dread about the first day of classes. Here is five reasons I don't look forward to that first week back at school.

1. The unknown

There are a ton of things that can happen when you arrive to your class. It’s something you’ve never taken before and sometimes with a teacher you’ve never had. I get anxiety thinking about arriving to class and where I’ll sit and if I’ll even know anyone there. And then I get anxiety about showing up to the wrong class or showing up late.

2. The introductions

I'm a very introverted and shy person. I hate having to speak to a bunch of people. Without fail every class and teacher will most likely make you introduce yourself to the class and tell them something about yourself. This is my worst nightmare. Having the entire classes’ attention on me and them waiting to hear my “interesting fact” or what my spirit animal is freaks me out. I get super nervous about it and even though this time around I’ve met the majority of my peers, going to a small school and all, I still get really nervous about it.

3.The syllabi

For most on the first day of class they go over the syllabus and yes this is a great thing because that means you don’t have to start on lecture right away but it can still be a pain. I personally don’t find the syllabi to be very entertaining and capturing so when the teacher goes on and on about it, it gets hard to stay awake. This may be because I like to read the syllabus before going to class so the professor is just repeating a bunch of stuff I already read, but it barely make it through. You get the same basic spiel in all of your classes the only changes are what topics you’ll learn and projects. It sucks but at the same time I know it’s a requirement and its better than starting with lectures right off the bat.

4. The information

Being that it’s the first day of classes the professor will begin to tell you all the information on all the upcoming projects/essays and such that after a while it gets overwhelming. You go from one class to another and they all give you loads of information to retain. It can get to be a lot but the good thing is that they usually touch back on the subject later on in the course.

5. The people

I am a huge introvert! I get a lot of anxiety because of all the new people I’ll be interacting with. Knowing that I'm going t a new class were ill meet new people makes me very anxious because my mind likes to make me freak out when there is nothing to freak out about. I get so nervous and anxious because it’s all I’ll think about the days leading up to the start of classes. I know it’s ridiculous for me to be getting so nervous about something so minimal but I can’t help it. It’s how my brain is wired and I can’t get myself to see that there is really nothing to be so worried about.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
