Almost everyone in the United States is terrified of Donald Trump becoming president. It’s shocking that the country that just elected its first African-American president eight years ago would be so eager to elect a white man who repeatedly offends minorities such as Mexicans and Muslims. At first, democrats were somewhat amused by his candidacy, assuming that no one would ever elect a president who is so outwardly racist and sexist. Now, as the election moves on, it becomes clear that Trump may have a chance of getting into office and likely making policy changes that would negatively impact not only the United States, but countries all over the globe, such as Canada, China, and Iran (the guardian). The entire world, minus Russia, is horrified by the idea of Trump in office, with worries ranging from trade problems to nuclear catastrophes. Among the concerns that everyone has regarding Trump, the biggest are about nuclear policy. Many are worried that Trump will tear up the international nuclear deal with Iran in which Tehran agreed to refrain from a wide range of nuclear activities and limit others in return for relief from sanction. While the agreement was in many ways a step towards achieving peace in the Middle East, Trump attempts to make it look like a surrender to the Islamic Republic. If Trump removes the agreement, America will have a substantial increase in Middle Eastern enemies, giving ISIS an opportunity to grow significantly. As a senior diplomat in Vienna said, “He would make an important contribution to anti-American sentiment around the world.”
If Europeans had an opportunity to vote, only 6% would want to see Trump in office, again, not including Russia. It is an understatement to say that Trump’s presidency would be a nightmare. He represents everything that our founding fathers were trying to get away from when they established this nation. So, who can take down this terrifying monster of a billionaire? It would have to be one of the two most popular Democrats in this election, Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. To me, the answer is clear: the one who has always been on the right side of issues throughout history, Bernie Sanders.
Huffington Post estimates that if America were to vote between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, 39.2% would vote for Trump and 44.8% would vote for Clinton. If it were down to Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, 37.8% would vote for Trump and 48.8% would vote for Sanders. While the polls to show Clinton over Trump, it’s Sanders who has the most potential of beating him. For democrats to beat Trump, they need a candidate who is the polar opposite of him. Bernie Sanders has political views that are very different, while Clinton shares some key views with Trump, such as their agreement to keep God in the public sphere. In addition, Clinton has accepted donations from Trump, which most Democrats see as a “political nightmare.” For the most part, Democrats are not too happy with Clinton. According to a CNN poll, 57% of voters say Clinton is untrustworthy, and 55% of voters have an unfavorable view of her. Moreover, Clinton has been through scandals. In 2009, her early secretary days, Clinton’s aides and officials pushed to allow Clinton to use her personal email account in her office, paying little attention to laws and regulations regarding the handling of classified information and the preservation of government records. It wasn’t until just recently that the FBI was informed of the email scandal and began investigating the Clinton foundation. Anderson Cooper asked Clinton the question everyone was thinking in a debate; “Will you say anything to get elected?” Based on her deceitfulness, some democrats would prefer Trump over Clinton. In the end, the public’s unfavorable view of Clinton as an untrustworthy candidate and the FBI investigating Clinton’s emails ruin the chances of Clinton defeating Trump in the election.
On the flip side, Bernie Sanders is not linked to scandal, is against billionaires controlling politics, and has been able to predict what will happen after a political decision has been made. Unlike Hillary, Sanders has always been on the right side of history. When he was a student at the University of Chicago, Sanders was active in the Congress on Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee. During the 1960’s, he was arrested while protesting against segregation in Chicago public schools. In the same decade, Clinton strongly supported 1964 republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, who voted against the Civil Rights Act. Even when the common opinion was morally wrong by today’s standards, he went against the grain. In 1996, 68% of people believed that same-sex marriage should not be legal, the same year Bernie Sanders voted against the Defense of Marriage Act. Sanders has been working hard to for the civil rights of homosexuals since the early 1970s and for the civil rights of African Americans since the early 1960s. In 2002, when the majority of the House of Representatives passed the Patriot Act, giving the government the right to use surveillance on the public, Bernie Sanders voted against it.
Not only has he been right about civil rights issues, he has been right about foreign policy issues. In 2003, Sanders voted against the invasion of Iraq, predicting it to be expensive and futile, with many unintended consequences. The war in Iraq has cost the U.S. $1.7 trillion with an additional $490 billion in benefits owed to war veterans, and because the war was financed on borrowed money, the cost will grow to be more than $6 trillion over the next few decades due to interest. In addition to the large cost that Sanders predicted, the war killed at least 189,000 Iraqi civilians and may have been responsible for four times as many deaths.
When presented with the right information, it is clear to see who is truly the best candidate to beat Donald Trump. While Hillary Clinton has experience, she has a very poor reputation with the American public. The only person who can beat Trump is Bernie Sanders, the man who always votes with the people in mind and continuously fights for the rights of minorities. And what better way to end the first African American president’s term than electing the first Jewish president.
