Final Countdown

What happens throughout the last few weeks of the semester.

Now that Thanksgiving break is over, it is time to gear up for the final stretch of the semester. Currently, I am feeling several emotions: Overwhelmed, anxious and nervous to name a few. Yet, despite these ubiquitous feelings in the pit of my stomach and that pesky little voice in the back of my head that is telling me I have failed everything, I know I must pull myself together and finish this semester strongly. As someone who becomes very anxious at the prospect of her future, I need to constantly remind myself that the semester isn't over yet and that I still have control over the tiny (and probably insignificant) fraction of my future that is these next three weeks. Below, I have compiled a list of what will most likely happen in my life over the next few weeks.

1. The Sunday after break

Ah, arriving on campus from a restful four-day break. The bags under your eyes have disappeared, your room is freshly stalked with potato chips, Cheetos, and Ramen and you think to yourself, "Yeah, OK...I can survive these next few weeks."

2. That Monday night

Not in the good way. After your first full day of classes, you begin to realize how much work you actually have to do in less than a month.

3. The Wednesday after break

The bags under your eyes have resurfaced. And after hours of staring at your computer screen, you can't seem to blink like a normal person because your eyes are so dry.

4. The first Friday after break

You begin to question everything; the only thing you are sure of is that you would rather be anywhere but here.

5. Saturday

You wake up super early, having slept well the night before and hit the library where you stay glued to a hard wooden chair until dinner time.

6. [That] Saturday night:

You know this is probably the last night of the semester you can afford to have some fun. So treat yo' self!

But stay away from the "snake juice"... you have to wake up early tomorrow, too.

6. Sunday

Before you know it, it's Sunday: The beginning of the LAST week of the semester. And you feel like you just got hit in the face by its unexpected arrival...seriously, where did the time go?

7. The last day of the semester

At first, you're ecstatic:

But then you remember there is still finals week to look forward to:

9. Reading period

Life gets serious and you're about to kick some butt. You're going to ace these finals!

10. Finals week

It's the night before finals and you know there is nothing you can do now but hope for sleep to come and maybe pray for a little luck.

11. Last day of finals

Run. And run far.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
