Comic books have attracted audiences from all different demographics since the late 1930's. Used at first as a propaganda tool for World War Two, comics from both DC and Marvel produced some of their most iconic superheros, including Superman, Batman, Captain America and Iron Man. As World War Two ended in 1945, comic book sales across the board saw a decline in sales. The books were seen as childish and brainwashing, and many said the books made children violent. By the time the Cold War had kicked off, comic books had entered what is known as the "Silver Age", which was a major revival of all of our favorite classic superheroes. By the late 80's and early 90's comics again entered huge revival stage, and entered what is known as the "Bronze Age". In today's cpomic book world, we have seen some incredibly odd, and incredibly awesome superpowers. From Superman shooting mini supermen out of his palm, to Dr. Strange's ability to create entire new universes with a simple thought, we have seen some crazy and odd superpowers come about over the last 80 years. Within this article, I'm going to break down the all time best and most jealous inducing superpowers we have ever seen come out of comic books, all within true nerd-like fasion. Keep in mind, being incredibly good at a skill is not included as a superpower. This means that even Green Arrow and Hawkeye are definitely badass, they aren;t "super". With that being said, let's get on with the break down.
15. Impenetrable Skin
With Netflix's newest release to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's assest of Luke Cage, Marvel fans both new and old are getting their first live action look at how beneficial this superhuman power can be. We've also seen this superpower come in handy with Superman, but then again, what power doesn't Superman have? This power allows the bearer to resist litterally anything that comes their way. Bullets, baseball bats, knives, and fists are no match for those with this power. Pretty handy thing to have next time you find yourself saving the world.
14. Construct Creation
Before I talk about the Green Lantern, let's all do our best to ignore the Ryan Reynolds movie that came out several years ago and completely ruined the beloved comic book character. Green Lantern, while not just the name of one hero, but several thousand across the galaxy, weilds the most powerful weapon in the universe. This weapon is a ring fueled purely on willpower. The higher the willpower of the holder, the more powerful the holder becomes. The ring is able to create literally anything that the holder imagines, from gigantic nuclear warheads to monsters of deep space, the limits to the ring are matched only by the amount of willpower within the holders soul.
13. Mind Control/Manipulation
When we first got to see Scarlet Witch appear in action during Avengers: Age of Ultron, we saw a terrifyingly awesome use of her powers. She was able to seep into the mind of Tony Stark to make his worst dreams come true. We also got to see her single handedly take out the entire team of Avenger's with a flick of the wrist, besides Hawkeye. But let's face it, anyone who is able to take out Earth's Mightiest Heros by themselves deserves to make it onto this list.
12. Rapid Regeneration
Deadpool, Wolverine, and The Flash are just a few characters who make use of incredible power. We've seen in Deadpool, Wade Wilson was practically unstoppable. Granted, he could still feel pain, but even when he took a knife to the skull, he still came up fighting. While The Flash doesn'e have these powers to that extent, he is still able to heal a broken arm in under three hours, as we got to see in the CW's first season of the hit show The Flash. This power definitely has different levels to it, but it is still useful nonetheless.
11. Super Senses
Superman, Supergirl, and Daredevil are the most notable people that have these heightened senses. Both Kryptonians have incredible hearing, but Daredevil is another hero entirely. Being blinded in an accident as a child, Matt Murdoch trained as an orphan and developed hearing capabe of reaching several blocks away. In his solo Netflix series, he can be seen using his sense of hearing to defend Hell's Kitchen, from anyone who comes to harm his beloved home. Imagine being able to eavesdrop on conversations from across the cafeteria, or listening in on what your roommates are saying from the other room.
10. Invisibility
We have seen Susan Storm in a few different iterations of The Fantastic Four. Let's ignore Fox's newest version (that movie doesn't exist). Among her abilities of generating force fields, Susan Storm can also make herself invisible. Now, if you're a teenage boy, you might be wanting to use these powers for a few inappropriate circumstances, but let's try and think of something a little more beneficial. Such things could be like sneaking into Area 51 or the Pentagon. If you say you don't want to know the secrets of the government, you are lying.
9. Shape shifting
From Beast Boy to Matian Manhunter shapeshifting cmes into play through a ton of comic storylines. Shapeshifting can be defined as literally changing your shape to anything that you imagine. Beast Boy prefers to transform into animals, as implied by his name. Martian Manhunter is a little more limited. He still has the ability to transform into whomever he wishes, but he must know that person or creature to do so. This could be used in numerous ways, some for better some for worse.
8. Super strength
Super strength is about a generic as super powers come. A ton of superheros have this ability, including Superman, The Hulk, Wolverine, and Spider-man. Being able to lift one thousand pounds as if you were curling a two pound dumbbell would be pretty awesome. This comes in handy more than you'd think, which is why we see it used so often.
7. Size change
In Marvel's Civil War, we got to see Ant-Man for the second time on screen. In his solo movie, he was able to change his size at the push of a button, going from a full sized human to the size of an ant. In Civil War, we got to the the opposite end of the spectrum, and saw Ant-Man grow to a colossal size. This would come in handy for many reasons, any where from sabotage to fending off giant invaders.
6. Flight
We all wish we could fly. Just like super strength, flight is something that is used by many characters across the board in both comic universes. Flight is something that allows heroes to travel vast distances in a matter of minutes, and is definitely something that makes superhero movies much more interesting.
5. Time manipulation
Time manipulation is something that is a little more rare in comic books. Seeing as manipulating time often results in time paradoxes, confusing timeline changes and so forth, comic companies tend not to use it to much as an attempt to not confuse the readers. Cable in the Marvel universe is the most well known time traveler, but in DC, we have a few heroes who use the time stream as their own personal highway. The Flash is probably the biggest perpetrator of abusing the time stream, and resulted in one of the most complex and entertaining comic events that DC has created. If you have yet to read The Flashpoint Paradox, go take a look. It's worth the read.
4. Magic
Magic is an incredible gift that takes years of practice. In comics, this goes as far as warping reality itself, and creating entire new dimensions. Doctor Strange is someone gifted with such abilities, but many others can be found just like him. Zatana, and Raven are just a few others who possess these abilities, and can range anywhere from conjuring to restoration to destruction.
3. Water Breathing
imagine being able to dive to the deepest parts of the ocean, and never having to worry about holding your breath. You literally could not loose a breath holding contest, and you could practically live under the ocean. With water covering 70 percent of the planet's surface, breathing underwater would come in handy. While Aquaman is normally the brunt of all superhero jokes, having his ability to breath underwater would be pretty cool. Just admit it.
2. Intangibility
This power is purely awesome. It is the ability to phase through solid objects. We've seen most recently in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Civil War, Vision has the ability to phase through anything at will. Did you lock your keys in the car again? No problem. Is someone trying to punch you in the face? No big deal, their hand will just pass right through you.
1. Super speed
Here we are at long last. If you have followed me here for awhile, you know i am a hardcore Flash fanboy. That is simply because with super speed, you are one of the most powerful beings in existence. You could run at thousands of miles per hour, breaking any land speed record. You'd be able to vibrate so fast that you phase through solid matter, move so quickly that you virtually slow down time, and generate energy on your own. This comes in at number one on the list because with super speed, you not only move really fast, but you actually already would have many of the powers listed above in your arsenal.
Well there it is. Fifteen of the best superpowers in comics. Do you agree with the list? Was there something that should be on there that wasn't? What would you change around? Let me know in the comments below!
