I am a feminist. There, I said it. I know, the word carries a lot of weight, and, sadly, most of it is negative. I don't fit the stereotype of what our society would like to depict feminists of being. I'm involved in greek life, wear pink, paint my nails, wear bras (most of the time), and only have one cat. I do not hate men (I'm really quite a fan ask my mom) or think that women are superior. I do, however, believe in the need for equality in our world.
I am a feminist because there is still a wage gap. Making 20% less than my equal doesn't particularly strike my fancy.
I am a feminist because we teach girls they can't be the "bread winners". How on Earth do we continue to do this? Especially when 40 percent of households with children under 18 are led by a mother that is the primary source of income for her family.
I am a feminist because I am tired of hearing "boys will be boys".
I am a feminist because I have to carry pepper spray with me when I walk home at night from studying.
I am a feminist because "no" really does mean "no".
The word alone carries such a stigma, one which our media has so kindly crafted for us. This is the same media that is perpetuating rape culture, body image issues, and oh how the list can go on. I'm not a feminist because I hate men. I am a feminist because I want to be treated as an equal.
