Over the past couple of years, we've seen plenty of plus size models landing huge campaigns and paving the way for body positivity. We've seen successful plus-sized models like Ashley Graham take over the fashion industry by storm and show girls that their bodies, no matter the shape or size, are perfect. We've seen so much progress in the fashion world, but this incident has people upset. BeBe Rexha recently posted on her social media platforms about how many luxury designers have refused to dress her for the Grammy's because she is a size 8. Rexha posted on her social media platforms about how she felt these designers were in the wrong for refusing to dress her because she wasn't as thin as some of the other actresses, singers, and models who were attending the awards. In her Twitter post, she claims, "If you don't like my fashion style or my music that's one thing. But don't say you can't dress someone that isn't a runway size."
This accusation is making people angry because of the effect it has on others. Rexha is a woman who is average size, and we do not consider a size 8 as plus sized. For these brans to make a big deal out of an average size woman who isn't a "runway size." tells girls who are these sizes that they aren't thin enough. Many of these brands are sending out the wrong message to audiences in that they don't want to be represented by average sized women; they only want to be represented by stick thin celebrities.
In recent days since Rexha posted, some designers have stepped forward and offered to dress her at the Grammy's. My hope in this situation is that she will be approached by even more designers. I also hope some of the designers that refused to dress her will reconsider due to the backlash, because everyone deserves to be represented in fashion no matter their size.
