Chapter 4: A Witch's Cauldron
A few days have passed since the children found the book. Phil has been on the lookout, staying up late at night to see if he catches Elizabeth. Lauren has been reading the spell book to see if there was a way of contacting her.
"It's no use Phil," Lauren says. "We'll never find Elizabeth and help her one true love so they can ride into the sunset together."
"You sound like a Disney movie. Get over it."
"But it's the truth! How are we going to find them?"
There was a knock on the front door. Phil goes to check who it is.
"It's grandma Aggie!" Phil says before he opens the door.
"Hi grandma," the kids exclaim together.
"My dear darlings, I have missed you so much! How are you?"
"We're good grandma. Are you here to spend Halloween with us?" Lauren asks.
"Yes I am. But I am also here because a little birdy told me you found a special book of mine."
The kids look at each other with frightened faces. They started to wonder how did grandma find out about that.
"Lauren did you tell mom? Oh, I knew you weren't going to keep your mouth shut. I was surprised to see you kept this a secret for this long!"
"What are you talking about Phil! We all know you're the biggest gossiper in this family. You are always talking trash about our cousins!"
The kids keep arguing and grandma Aggie starts laughing.
"Guys, guys. No one told me. I sensed it."
"What?" the kids ask in unison.
"That book has been in our family for hundreds of years. It has been passed down to each generation. And don't try to act dumb with me because I know you read the story about your great great great and 20 more greats aunt Elizabeth."
"You mean to tell me that Elizabeth is related to us? What are we then? Witches and Warlocks too?" Phil asks.
"Yes but not as powerful as we used to be. Our powers are dwindling because the family is getting smaller and times are changing. And your father likes to pretend this isn't true so he rejected his powers and lost them a long time ago. But there is still hope for you guys! So have you found Elizabeth?"
"No we haven't found her. I've been trying to stay up late to keep an eye on the barn which is where we saw her last time. But she hasn't come," Phil explained.
"Hmm, she probably got scared since she realized someone saw her. Come, lets go to the attic where I have my cauldron so I can cast a locator spell."
"You can do that grandma?" Lauren asks with eyes filled with excitement.
"Why of course sweetheart. We're witches. We can do anything."
The three of them go up the stairs to the attic. Aggie pulls out her key and opens the door. The room is much bigger than the kids expected. It had shelves filled with hundreds of books, empty vials, and ingredients for potions.
"So this is why mom always told us to stay away from the attic," Lauren says.
"Yes, your mother is a special child," Aggie says in a sarcastic tone.
Aggie begins to mix ingredients in her cauldron while chanting strange words in Latin. The kids watch her in awe, trying to decipher what the words meant.
A few minutes pass and the cauldron begins to glow a strange green color. Smoke and steam comes out of the cauldron, filling the room.
"There! I now know where she is. We will look for her tonight since there is a full moon."
