Chapter 1

It was simple back then really, I could have conquered it all. I was known as one of the best. Looking back at my career, it all comes back to me now. But before I get into all of that, I have to tell you my name. Goodness, where are mymanners.

Well, to begin I was born Eliza Clark and I was born in Atlanta, Georgia. I was the oldest of six children to hard working farmers, who made their meager living from whatever the farm brought in for them.

Oh, I want to gasp at the thought. How could a girl like me have been born to such a family? I really never connected to them. I know it sounds mean, but come on. I was not meant for the country life. As a little girl I had aspirations to be someone famous and make it in the big city.

This is when I got the notion to go and make it big in New York City. The city that never sleeps. This is why once I graduated from high school I took a bus to the city. My father, Henry, protested, but I was 18 now and there was nothing Pa and Ma could do. So, there I was in the big city. It was 1970 and I have to say at first I felt a bit lost. After all, the latest trends in NYC were quite different than those I’d known from Georgia.

As soon as I stepped out, I could see the beautiful women all walking about with their hair set up in some type of beehive shape and their mini-knit skirts or vintage dresses, followed by men in their own respective business, vintage suits. There were so many different hats and platform shoe styles. I was beginning to get quite anxious to see if I had made the wrong choice.

No! No! No! I began scolding myself. You have made it to the big city and there is no looking back.

The year was 1961 and I can still recall the cool, breezy air hitting me on that August evening.

I have to say, I never would have guessed that the weather could have been so nice during that season. It had been an easy choice to leave. After all, my Ma and Pa just never understood that I had bigger dreams than the both of them. I tired to get my youngest sister Agnes on board. All she ever did was shake her head at me while my two older brothers taunted me.

“Now Eliza, you are being silly!” they laughed.

“Get back to reality and work on your chores," chimed Agnes.

“Oh what do y’all know, I will show you."

“Sure you will, Eliza!”

I can still hear them laughing at me. But who is laughing now? I am. They are still working the farm while I am here in New York City: the city where all dreams come true.

When I think about how hard Mama worked to set up everything for Papa... Goodness, the woman had no life. Working and working. I mean, I do feel bad for her, but this is why I set my goals really high. You see, I never wanted the life she had.

Anyways, now to the good part: How I became Rosaline Starr. It happened almost overnight... Now to go back to the beginning.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
