Almost as much as I am obsessed with The Walking Dead and American Horror Story, I also have an intense love for BBC shows, namely The Fall. Netflix really has me hooked with all the international programming it provides to us Americans.
Last night, as I finally figured out how to configure my computer to watch the Belfast drama unfold between ruggedly handsome serial killer Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) and the badass British investigator Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson), I couldn't help but wonder how things had ended last season. With Spector's life in the balance after being captured by police and shot by James Tyler (Brian Milligan), an angry, disturbed former patient of Spector's counseling, the title for this episode is appropriate as we check on all who have been affected by Spector's scourge (and even in how his life hangs by merely a thread.)
When we begin the episode, Spector is seen driving down a dimly lit tunnel at night, his penchant for blues music playing softly in the background. One may think that he is alive and well, but this moment is quickly squashed as the windshield to his car abruptly shatters and the audience is brought back to the present: Spector on a stretcher in an ambulance, the paramedic trying to keep him breathing. Stella, who opted to go with Spector instead of checking on her newly minted lover/colleague, Tom Anderson (Colin Morgan), rides along, melancholy and covered in Spector's blood. Upon arrival at the hospital, Dr. O'Donnell (Richard Coyle) and his team are currently tending to Spector's latest victim Rose Stagg (Valene Kane). Luckily, they have found her alive and have stabilized her condition.
The doctor soon learns from Officer Gail McNally (Bronagh Taggart) that it is vital that Spector is kept alive at all costs, as he is responsible for Rose's condition and stands to face trial. Dr. O'Donnell quickly moves to action while Rose is moved and Paul is quickly wheeled in to the ER (with Stella in tow) to stabilize his condition. The doctor and his team work diligently to strip Spector of his clothing and determine just how severe his wounds were.
All the while, Stella watches from the hallway, glancing over at the janitor mopping up Spector's blood from the floor and nervous that he could potentially die. Later, while she's on the phone with ACC Burns (John Lynch), Stella learns that Burns will be meeting with the ombudsman on this matter. With Tyler dead, Anderson en route to the hospital, and Spector's family needing to be informed of his condition, there is still so much to be done.
Spector, now stabilized, is wheeled into the elevator and up to the operating room to remove the two bullets that are lodged in his body. Stella thanks Dr. O'Donnell and asks him to take care of Tom Anderson, as he has now arrived to the hospital. Meanwhile, McNally is sent to Stella's hotel to collect her things so that she can change out of her blood-soaked clothes. In the now empty ER room, Spector's blood and clothing is scattered on the floor. A testament to how severe his injuries are.
During this time, Burns meets with the ombudsman CC Franks (Patrick FitzSymons) to brief him on Spector's condition as well as the entire situation at hand. Burns advises that Stella is ready to go to the press and make a statement, but Franks believes that Stella should not be the one to make that call and that Burns should do it instead. She needs to stay focused on the investigation and not go to the press.
The police have finally reached Sally Ann Spector (Bronagh Waugh) and her family to advise them of Paul's condition. Outside, daughter Olivia (Sarah Beattie) and son Liam (David Beattie) are playing, unaware of their father's life hanging in the balance. Sally Ann later sits Olivia and Liam down to tell them what happened. Olivia is adamant about seeing her father, but Sally Ann refuses to let the children see the truth about their father. Angry, Olivia storms out of the room.
Paul, on the other hand, continues to be stuck in his own mind as the doctors try to locate the two bullets in his body. After the "crash", Paul hears a voice call out "Peter", to which he responds with: Mother? The voices continue to bombard him as the doctors work in removing his spleen (which has shattered) and finally stabilizing him and moving him to the ICU — where Rose Stagg is located.
After Anderson is stitched up and has his arm examined, Stella goes to visit him. Anderson's career as an officer could be over as the bullet in his arm may have damaged nerves in his hand. Stella assures him he will be fine, but it's more than that for Anderson; he's jealous and angry since Stella left him at the scene to tend to Spector. It is here that Stella makes her intentions toward Spector clear: she wants him to live so that he can spend the rest of his life in prison for his crimes. After being stitched up, Anderson heads home, contemplating the fate of his career.
Later, Burns finally makes it to the hospital, walking in on Stella preparing for the conference. He halts her efforts and lets her know that while she is still leading the investigation, she will not be going before the media with information. Instead, she is to continue with the investigation and Burns will make the statement. During this time, Stella is also made aware that Tom Stagg (Jonjo O'Neill), Rose's husband, has arrived at the hospital and is waiting for her. Stella meets with him and brings him to Rose.
When Burns goes to make the statement Paul, we finally get to see what has become of Katie Benedetto (Aisling Franciosi). While her mother Lisa (Lacy Moore) watches Burns speak about Spector, Katie walks in and starts to ask who they are talking about. Lisa tries to turn off the television and keep Katie away from any news about Paul, but the damage has been done. Katie, knowing that Paul is in the hospital fighting for his life (and is still delusional in thinking he loves her), tries to leave her house.
Unfortunately, because of the bail agreement made in Season 2, she is under house arrest. Frustrated and emotional, she later calls her friend Daisy (Tara Lee) and tearfully shares Paul's condition. Looking for help, Katie is rebuffed by Daisy as she laughs at the thought of being able to go anywhere near the hospital. This action angers Katie, now sulking and broodingin her own room, unable to reach out to Paul. Instead, she turns to her computer to read about the accusations against Paul.
In the Spector home, Sally Ann reads the same article, learning the truth about the accusations brought against her husband. Olivia walks in and under the guise of not being to sleep and being thirsty, manages to get Sally Ann to walk away from her computer. While out of the room, Olivia sneaks a peek at her mother's browser, learning of her father's identity as The Belfast Strangler.
With a despondent Rose, Tom is encouraged by Stella to just be patient with her. Just because Rose refused to fight back doesn't mean she wanted it. More than anything, she was frightened. As Tom leaves, Stella makes her way to Paul's room in ICU and is promptly thrown out by Nurse Sheridan (Aisling Bea). Prepared to wait out Paul's recovery, she takes a seat with an older woman (Barbara Adair) who says she has been waiting for her. The final scene of those in the ICU, suffering in silence.
When will Paul Spector wake up?
Will Katie attempt to visit Paul or is she on a sinister path?
If Spector dies, how will Stella cope?
Stay tuned for next week's recap!
