The Experiences Of A Commuter: Winter Edition

Being a commuter has its advantages, just not many in the winter time.

The temperature has officially dropped here in the lovely state of Ohio and winter is finally here. I walked outside this morning to get in my car and drive to school when I witnessed my cars first frost of the year. Winter in Ohio, three words that manage to give me a headache since you never know what that entails. At the beginning of November you either get a full covering of snow or in this years case, seventy degrees and sunshine. If you live in Ohio you know how true it is that we can experience a couple seasons a day and all of them in a week. The real fun comes in for those of us who commute to our college campuses during this eventful time.

I am a sophomore in college and have commuted the entire time. Nothing compares to attempting to get to class during a lovely snow storm. It is unlikely to get a snow day when you are in college. The large majority lives on campus and for people like me that go to a small school, your longest walk to class is fifteen minutes max. But then there is the very small group of commuters. It takes me approximately twenty to twenty five minutes to drive from my house to my school but in the winter that gets closer to forty. Fighting the snow in my tiny car makes for many adventures.

Here are some things that all of us commuters that live in a winter wonderland can relate to:

1. Waking up X amount of time early so your car can defrost and warm up before you leave. *This one is especially fun if you have an eight a.m class!!!*

2. The AWESOME commute of not only focusing on yourself driving but how all the other drivers are operating.

3. You live on country roads? Enjoy not having the road completely plowed and/or salted.

4. You finally made it to school, it's time to get a parking spot... Wait... You can't see where any of the outlines for a parking space are! *Pro Tip: just park kind of close to someone else but not too close, maybe you'll get lucky and end up in a real spot.*

5. You want to go somewhere off campus during a break in between classes? Not unless you want to wait for your car to defrost again.

6. Class is finally over and it is time to go home. Just kidding, it's time to go scrape the snow and ice off your car.

7. Good luck on your drive home, luckily by now the roads aren't too horrible. I hope.

8. Get up in the morning and do it all again tomorrow!

So, to all of my fellow commuters, good luck this winter and stay safe.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
