The Evolution Of The First Week Back

You always think that you're starting off strong.

Good old syllabus week, where we hope and pray we don't actually have to do work for classes. Time to move back into the dorms, prepare yourself for the mysterious cafeteria food, load your backpacks full of books and lug them all around campus, live off of coffee, and have the best time with your friends. Coming back to college is not an easy task, but we always get ready for the first week of classes with a little bit of optimism for the upcoming semester.

Here are my typical hopes and thoughts during the first week of school:

Monday: “I’m going to wake up early and go to the gym everyday!”

Your alarm goes off at 6:30, you get dressed, and lace up your running shoes. You always make that promise to yourself that this semester you’re going to get into shape, and stay in shape. The elliptical doesn't sound too bad...

Friday: *Hits snooze button 12 times”

Nope, not happening anymore. Who was I trying to kid? An hour of sleep sounds a lot more productive.

Monday: “I’m bringing my agenda, filling it out every day, and keeping to schedule! I'm going to do all of my work a week ahead of time!”

Each semester, we all try to buy those pretty expensive agendas in order to make ourselves feel like we have our lives organized. The first day of classes you fill out what you have to do for homework and reading, stress out, and never open it back up again.

Friday: “What’s due today?”

Yeah, you stopped filling it out Tuesday. You know you're going to be a hot, disorganized mess this semester with no clue what day it is. Should’ve saved your $10 on it for some Taco Bell.

Monday: “I’m going to eat so healthy this semester! The cafeteria does have a salad bar…”

Last semester you gained the dreaded 15 extra pounds, but you were able to shed some of it off in the summer. This semester, you’re not going to make the same mistake so you’re thinking that you can live off of the salad bar and avoid the pizza at all costs.

Friday: *Stress eats a half of a bag of Doritos and a whole sleeve of Oreos”

Monday: "What do I want to wear for the first day? A sundress? Yeah, definitely going with the dress, gotta look my best!"

You always make that promise to yourself that you'll wear all of your nicest clothes during the semester so that you look somewhat attractive and put together. You even take the time to do your hair and makeup!

Friday: "Hmm.. I wore yoga pants yesterday, I'll wear yoga pants and a hoodie again today. No one will care."

Too much effort. You save so much money though when you don't put on makeup.

So who are we all trying to kid? We always start out so strong on the first few days of the semester, but end up going back into our old habits. Stay strong fellow students, do whatever makes you happy, and have a wonderful semester! You will make it!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
