So if you're like me you are probably not so up to date on what the electoral college is. It was never really explained to me in school and it just seemed like everyone else already knew what it was. I had heard about it for years, but with the recent election it finally started to make some sense. Let me do my best to explain...
In the recent election the electoral college has gotten a lot of backlash. This is because Trump won the electoral college while Hillary won the popular vote. The electoral college is when states votes and whoever wins in that state gets a certain number of votes. The amount of votes is determined by the population of the people in that state. The popular vote is how many individual people voted for a candidate. To win the Presidential election one must get 270 votes or more from the electoral college.
So what does this have to do with anything?
Well, many are complaining because Hillary had the most popular votes from the election, but she did not win. How is this fair?
If we went by the popular vote big states with more people in them would have an unfair advantage over the less populated states. The goal is to let everyone's voice's be heard, not just the states with the most people.
And, honestly, in this election the voices of Americans were heard. For the next four years Donald Trump will be our President. He won fair and square. There is nothing we can do about it, so why don't we support him. It does not mean we have to give up certain beliefs, but at least give him a chance. He is not even in office yet. He could do great things for this country or the complete opposite, but we just have to wait and see.
Also, I would like to add that there is plenty more information about the electoral college. This is just briefly what I have discovered through this election. It can be very confusing, but I am still learning!
