Video games have come so far since their first early stages into the world. Now we see video games everywhere and are able to be played on almost any device with a screen and controller. But what some come to realize is that in becoming one of the greatest industries for entertainment in this lifetime, video games have had to undergo many setbacks and trial and error throughout the years. The history of video games is a long an in depth story of some of the greatest minds to ever invent a new entertainment platform.
In the earliest of stages of development, video games were mainly consisted of simple movement and controls and were not available to as many people as they are now, in fact some video games were too expensive for any person to own. Eventually, the original creators of the first video game “Pong” wanted to be able to make it affordable for any family to play their video game on their home television and this had sparked an entertainment revolution that would span across several decades.
After the “Pong” event, countries like Japan and China were at a rising point to competition with creating the first video game console that could be available to every country including the United States. Companies like Atari and Nintendo had brought the revolution the family doorstep with their first ever video game consoles that were affordable at a reasonable price. This had sparked many other companies to start producing video game consoles to rival each other. In the 1970s Nintendo and Atari were outselling many other companies and thus giving way for more inventions and better versions of games and consoles.
By the 1980s, many people who had owned a television also were now buying video game consoles or going to arcades that sprung up rapidly across the United States. The video game console had brought the revolution into the homes of many people and had hooked many. Competing companies allowed for many more versions with up to date software and graphics capabilities allowing for the video game industry to remain changing over the course of time.
By the 1990s, gaming on computers had begun a new trend including the advent of the Internet that allowed many video game players to connect with each other over a wireless network. Companies like Atari and Nintendo were now in competition with Microsoft and Sony, which had recently released the PlayStation to compete with Nintendo’s portable gaming system the GameBoy. These competitions in the industry caused massive sales and development for all companies involved.
Today, many technological advancements have made acquiring the best video game console for a reasonable price but has also connected the marketplace to which the whole world can play video games. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo remain as the main console companies but many other companies have stepped into the light as a new age of technology has made it possible to do.
